Are Outside Sales Teams Still Necessary for Enterprise IT Software ...

We no longer think that successful enterprise IT software sales depends upon an outside sales component. We have come to this conclusion as the result of our direct experience over the last 3 years selling this type of commodity into enterprise business markets. We are not precluding our customers from establishing and maintaining this type of effort. Rather, we do not think that the market is requiring this type of representative, any longer.

If our position is correct, then enterprise IT ISVs can dispense with a lot of costs that, in the past, were considered mandatory. At a minimum, these costs include rent for remote offices, and some portion (likely significant) of regular travel and entertainment expenses. Once alleviated of these costs, enterprise IT ISVs should have some latitude to apply funds in other areas, for example:

  • online marketing, which should include lead development campaigns, customer support, and brand management
  • and wider attendance of industry events, conferences, seminars, etc

The return on investments in online marketing and a more extensive marketplace presence should be substantial, and, in all likelihood, far more than perpetuating out of date sales structures where outside sales personnel are located remotely, but, nevertheless, spend most of their time on the telephone, and, rarely, on the road visiting prospects and/or clients.

For enterprise IT ISVs that have not engaged in this shift in sales team architecture, we strongly advise implementing a reorganization as soon as possible. We think it makes sense to maintain a substantial inside sales effort. In fact, we have written extensively in this blog on many topics that reside at the core of inside sales best practices, not the least of which is teleprospecting. A coordinated, integrated direct marketing effort that looks, primarily, to online marketing communications opportunities to generate leads, with direct telephone follow up and efforts to engage with prospects is, in our opinion, a winning strategy in today?s enterprise business market in the United States.

Of course, it makes sense to reorient top producing sales personnel to new roles that emphasize making better use of the telephone as a method of engaging with the market, in conjunction with periodic attendance at market events, conferences, seminars, etc. Why lose top producers when, in all likelihood, they would rather stay on board and simply reorient to the new strategies?

Finally, the best location for inside sales teams is the head office. Obviously, for virtual ISVs without a bonafide headquarters location, remote home offices will have to serve, but for businesses with headquarters, it makes sense to centralize sales team efforts.

If you are thinking about your current cost of sales and would like to trim expenses sensibly, while preserving working components of your sales team, please consider IMB Enterprises, Inc. We have direct first hand experience delivering successful results in 2012 with this type of method (in other words, a very strong inside sales effort, with little or no outside sales component). Please either telephone us at +1 631-673-2929 or complete the contact us form on our web site. We will be happy to reach out to you to learn more about your needs.

Instant View: Euro zone sentiment eases less than expected in Oct

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone economic sentiment fell less than expected in October, data showed on Tuesday, thanks to small improvements in optimism among consumers and in the retail sector, which helped limit the downward pull from industry, services and construction.

ECONOMISTS' COMMENTS

JENNIFER MCKEOWN, CAPITAL ECONOMICS

"October's deterioration in the euro-zone European Commission business and consumer surveys suggests that the economy started Q4 on a very weak note.

"The fall in the headline Economic Sentiment Indicator, from (an upwardly revised) 85.2 to 84.5, was broadly in line with expectations and left the index at its lowest level since August 2009.

"The decline was driven by falls in service sector and, particularly, industrial sentiment. Consumer sentiment edged up, as had been suggested by the flash estimate. But the index still points to further falls in consumer spending.

"And with unemployment data earlier this morning confirming that even the previously resilient German labor market is now weakening, consumer sentiment is likely to fall again before long.

"In all, the Economic Sentiment Indicator now appears consistent with annual contractions in euro-zone GDP of around 2.5 percent. That implies very steep quarterly falls in GDP in the next few quarters and is consistent with our well below consensus forecast of a 2.5 percent drop in GDP in 2013."

Sleep duration affects hunger differently in men and women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? A new study suggests that increasing the amount of sleep that adults get could lead to reduced food intake, but the hormonal process differs between men and women.

"Restricting sleep in healthy, normal weight participants has limited effects on metabolic risk factors and may affect food intake regulating hormones differently in men and women," said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, PhD, FAHA, the study's principal investigator. "We were surprised by the lack of a significant effect of sleep on glucose and insulin, leptin, and sex differences in the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin and the satiety hormone GLP-1."

The study, appearing in the November issue of the journal SLEEP, tracked the sleep duration, glucose dysregulation, and hormonal regulation of appetite in 27 normal weight, 30- to 45-year-old men and women. Participants provided fasting blood draws, and they were studied under two sleep conditions: Short (4 hours) or habitual (9 hours). Short sleep increased total ghrelin levels in men but not women and reduced GLP-1 levels in women but not in men, a sex difference that has not been reported before. The results suggest that the common susceptibility to overeat during short sleep is related to increased appetite in men and reduced feelings of fullness in women.

"Our results point to the complexity of the relationship between sleep duration and energy balance regulation," St-Onge said. "The state of energy balance, whether someone is in a period of weight loss or weight gain, may be critical in the metabolic and hormonal responses to sleep restriction."

According to the authors, this is the largest controlled clinical investigation of the effects of sleep reduction on hormonal regulation of food intake. The results support a causal role of sleep duration on energy intake and weight control.

Turkish police fire tear gas at banned secularist march

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of secularists protesting at a banned rally in the capital on Monday against what they see as an increasingly authoritarian and Islamist government.

The scenes of chanting men and women draped in Turkish flags and carrying banners portraying the country's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk highlight a longstanding division in Turkish society between staunch secularists on the one hand and more conservative religious Turks on the other.

Although Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan won a third term in power last year with 50 percent of the vote, many secular Turks fear his socially conservative AK Party has Islamist tendencies that threaten the secular republic founded by Ataturk.

"They are trying to turn us into another Iran or some kind of neo-Ottoman Empire. We are against this," said retired 64-year-old Erdem Sevinc.

"We are here today to send a message to those who are trying to destroy the principles of this republic," he said.

The local government in Ankara, also controlled by Erdogan's AK Party, banned the rally citing "intelligence" it would be used for "provocation", a move protesters said was designed to silence government opponents.

"Why have they banned this march? Because they are scared. They are scared of course," said 68-year-old Metin Alkan, sporting a black tie emblazoned with Ataturk's face.

"Look at us, do we look like a danger?" he said, laughing.

Waving Turkish flags several thousand people gathered outside the old parliament building in the city center to try to march to Ataturk's mausoleum to mark the 89th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

"Resign government! Damn you Tayyip!" the crowd chanted, referring to the prime minister.

"The day will come when the AK Party will give account to the people," they shouted.

"We are Mustafa Kemal's soldiers! Turkey is secular and will remain secular!" others shouted.

But the marchers were kept back by a barricade of riot police who began firing tear gas and water cannon into the crowd, which included children and elderly men and women, as some people tried to storm the police blockade.

TEAR GAS, WATER CANNON

Some in the crowd threw projectiles at the line of police, prompting them to fire more tear gas and water cannon. People pushed and shoved to get out of the line of fire while others were doubled up on the ground, coughing from the gas.

Several young girls were carried out of the crowd unconscious, drenched by the water cannon.

"Why are they doing this? This is really bad. We are citizens of this country, we are not enemies," said 21-year-old computer studies student Melisa Cilli.

"They want another kind of system here, a dictatorship, with Erdogan as the dictator," she said.

Several hours later police removed the barricades allowing the crowds to march to the mausoleum some three kilometers away.

Erdogan was first elected a decade ago with an overwhelming majority and has presided over a period of unprecedented prosperity, winning him admirers among Western nations keen to portray Turkey as a democratic example in a troubled region.

But that success story has been undermined by growing criticism of the authoritarian style of his rule.

Hundreds of politicians, academics and journalists are in jail on charges of plotting against the government, while more than 300 army officers were convicted last month of conspiring against Erdogan almost a decade ago, and handed long jail terms.

Media watchdog the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said this month that Turkey had jailed more reporters than Iran, China or Eritrea.

Secular Turks also point to increasing restrictions on alcohol and changes to the education system introduced by the AK Party as a sign the country is becoming more Islamic.

Erdogan has also forged close ties with Islamist governments in Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere in the Arab world.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) set up by Ataturk in 1924, joined the march and later criticized the police's handling of the event.

"Those people only had Turkish flags in their hands. The state had police, tear gas, water cannon and tanks. Hey, where are you going? Are you going to war? You don't need permission to celebrate the republic," he said.

Aspen Historical Society needing to protect its ... - Aspen Daily News

From 10th Mountain Division equipment to Andy Mill?s Olympic uniform to Elizabeth Paepcke?s lavender shoes and gardening hat, the basement archive of the Aspen Historical Society is a treasure trove of local life.

On a recent tour, archivist Anna Scott showed off the scenes depicted in a recently acquired collection of 1,500 glass plate photograph negatives, capturing Aspen from 1900 to World War I. Poking through the archive, one might find the town fire chief?s helmet from the late 1800s, Hilder Anderson?s accordion, Albert Schweitzer?s piano, or all of the legal briefs from Whip Jones? legendary U.S. Supreme Court battle with the Aspen Skiing Co.

While this stuff is priceless, the price of properly protecting it is about $1 million.

The society is making a fundraising push to raise the money to do that, as the centerpiece of a larger $3 million capital campaign. The remaining $2 million would also give the society a general endowment, which is does not currently have.

The archive collection boasts more than 24,500 photographs, 6,500 objects, 5,900 written items and documents and 1,000 books. Longtime Aspen Times photographer Mary Hayes recently agreed to give the society her 65,000 photograph collection.

A professional analysis of the overflowing basement archive found it is undersized and outdated, with inadequate, precarious protection from fire and flood, falling below current museum archive standards.

Among the archival no-nos in the current set-up: a downstairs bathroom pumps waste up to ground level, moving it through a ceiling above the archive room; lights and plugs in the room serve as ignition sources and raise fire risk; there?s no cold storage for film and negatives, and no firewalls.

?We?re stuck in the ?70s down here,? Scott said.

The new design would add 35 percent to the storage capacity ? without adding to the building or basement?s footprint ? by moving the archivists? desks upstairs and otherwise rejiggering the downstairs. The work would also provide firewalls on all sides and remove any possible fire-starters.

?We want to protect our archives, because they are extraordinary,? society President Georgia Hanson said. ?The fact is that they are at risk and we want to reduce every occurrence of risk. ... Water is a huge fear. Fire is a huge fear.?

?Dorothy M. Atkins/Aspen Daily News

Aspen Historical Society?s President Georgia Hanson opens the late Hildur Anderson?s accordion, which is one of many items in the organization?s archive. Anderson, a member of the Aspen Hall of Fame, was a longtime local who was know for the many accordion lessons she gave to children in the area. Anderson died in 2002.

As is, staff members each have a ?red book? emergency binder. It carries instructions for what to do in case of an archive-threatening emergency, and has a list of what items firefighters should prioritize pulling out of the archive first.

After the renovation, Hanson said, the risk of catastrophic loss would be greatly reduced, and the archives would be brought up to the standards of the American Alliance of Museums.

The new plan was developed with the help of national archive expert Walter Crimm, who has worked for the Smithsonian Institute and History Colorado. Crimm provided his services in exchange for ski passes. The architectural design is by Steev Wilson of Forum Phi Architecture.

The $999,500 project would renovate the entire carriage house on the Historical Society?s West End grounds. Built in 1976, the three-story carriage house hosts five society employees as well as its rich archive collection.

Along with the archive renovation, and included in the $1 million price tag, the nonprofit is aiming to remodel the upper floors of the carriage house, which are currently over-run with piles of items from the archive. Without expanding the building?s footprint, the plans would revamp the upstairs offices and add a public research area, a meeting room, and include an energy efficient retrofit. The attic, currently used for overflow storage, would be renovated into office space for the society president and other staff. The conceptual plans show the interior crafted in Bauhaus style, in tribute to Herbert Bayer, with flourishes of ?Bayer blue.?

?We are not trying to get bigger,? Hanson said. ?We are trying to fulfill our responsibility to preserve these archives.?

The collection, noted Scott, is used by locals as well as researchers and people with local interest from around the world.

?We get used by people all over the world and the nation,? she said.

Hanson is hoping to complete the overhaul by the end of next year, which marks the society?s 50th anniversary and is also the time of her planned retirement. She wants to leave the archive safely protected, she said, and the organization with an endowment assuring its financial well-being.

A voter-approved property tax has helped support the society since 2006, levying about $2.38 for every $100,000 of property value. It brings in about $575,000 per year. Last year the tax funds accounted for 72 percent of the society?s operating budget. The rest comes from donations and program fees, according to the society?s budget.

Additional Kepler data now available to all planet hunters

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., is releasing 12 additional months worth of planet-searching data meticulously collected by one of the most prolific planet-hunting endeavors ever conceived, NASA's Kepler Mission.

As of Oct. 28, 2012, every observation from the extrasolar planet survey made by Kepler since its launch in 2009 through June 27, 2012, is available to scientists and the public. This treasure-trove contains more than 16 terabytes of data and is housed at the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes, or MAST, at the Space Telescope Science Institute. MAST is a huge data archive containing astronomical observations from 16 NASA space astronomy missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope. It is named in honor of Maryland U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski.

Over the past three years the Kepler science team has discovered 77 confirmed planets and 2,321 planet candidates. All of Kepler's upcoming observations will be no longer exclusive to the Kepler science team, its guest observers, and its asteroseismology consortium members and will be available immediately to the public.

The objects already discovered may only be the tip of the iceberg. The data store contains clues to the existence of as yet undiscovered planets and a record of stellar behavior of stars near the Sun.

Since its launch, the Kepler spacecraft has stared almost nonstop at more than 150,000 stars in the direction of the summer constellations Cygnus and Lyra. The Kepler mission is operated by NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

The spacecraft simultaneously measures the variations in brightness of the stars every 30 minutes, searching for periodic dips in a star's brightness that occur when an orbiting planet crosses in front of it and partially blocks the light from its parent star.

These fluctuations are tiny compared with the brightness of the star. For an Earth-size planet transiting a solar-type star, the change in brightness is less than 1/100 of 1 percent. This event is similar to the amount of dimming if a flea were to crawl across a car's headlight viewed from several miles away.

These brightness variations are available in the Kepler inventory. Finding planets requires stellar detective work by repeatedly measuring variations in the brightness of target stars.

In addition to yielding evidence for planets circling some of the target stars, the Kepler data also reveal information about the behavior of many of the other stars being monitored. Kepler astronomers have discovered star spots, flaring stars, double-star systems, and "heartbeat" stars, a class of eccentric binary systems undergoing dynamic tidal distortions and tidally induced pulsations.

There is far more data in the Kepler archives than astronomers have time to analyze quickly. Avid volunteer astronomers are invited to make Kepler discoveries by perusing the archive through a website called "Planet Hunters," (http://www.planethunters.org/). A tutorial informs citizen scientists how to analyze the Kepler data, so they may assist with the research. Visitors to the website cannot actually see individual planets. Instead, they look for the effects of planets as they sweep across the face of their parent stars. Volunteer scientists have analyzed over 14 million observations so far. Just last week citizen scientists announced the discovery of the first planet to be found in a quadruple-star system.

Weekend project: Flashing Ubuntu to your Nexus 7

Ubuntu

Web browsing on the Nexus 7, using Ubuntu and Firefox

I love fiddling with things. Especially electronic things. I admit, I've fooled with ARM builds of Ubuntu on Android devices, or running them in a chroot environment. I read the comments and forums, so I know I'm not the only one. The problem is, that while it's fairly easy to do, if you're not comfortable with terminal commands you just won't be doing it. Canonical, who is using the Nexus 7 as a sort of reference for Ubuntu on ARM touch devices changed that today by releasing a simple one click installer.

Now, anyone who can install Ubuntu on their computer can just as easily install it on their Nexus 7. It's not very practical, and you'll likely flash back to Android after a few hours of playing with it, but it is extremely cool to play with for a few. If you're the type who likes to hack and flash at your Nexus 7, you will want to try this. Read on.

MONEY? News ? Online Jobs Expected to Increase in 2013 ...

St. Louis, Missouri (PRWEB) October 27, 2012

Online jobs are one way of earning income for some displaced workers or stay-at-home moms. While telecommuting was popular in the 1990s, the expansion of the Internet has opened new doors to employment. A new study reviewed by the CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website has revealed that online jobs are expected to increase in 2013 to higher than expected levels. Part of this expansion is attributed to the number of job layoffs that are causing more entrepreneurs to create online companies. The CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website is offering access to job and business training entirely online. This training can be accessed here at this link online.

A recent October story published in the Star Tribune brought to life the increasing numbers of adults that are preparing to work online or find accessible employment online. These trends are growing in many U.S. states as the job markets are flooding with recent graduates that already have computer and social media job skills.

Entrepreneurs in the U.S. have grown steadily due in part to the opportunities that are now available online. Part of the CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website information includes training men and women with Internet marketing business skills. These skills can be used to begin working online and are offered as an alternative to the standard 9 to 5 employment.

Government agencies like the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the USA has taken interest in the rise in online workers. New positions like social media manager and freelance writer have been added or updated in the published data to make public the growth of these workers online.

For those that are able to work online, the multitude of opportunities available is almost endless. The Internet marketing training offered through the Creating Jobs for America website is an example of one way that some are using to work for themselves online.

Some bloggers are earning upwards of six figures a year according to published data. While some bloggers write for corporate companies, many have learned the skills required to setup large and small blogs that can be monetized online. Part of the core training as an Internet marketer includes blogging and affiliate marketing income programs.

The CreatingJobsforAmerica.com website locates the best training and now offers this training to workers that want to leave the offline working world behind.

The training programs reviewed and offered by the Creating Jobs for America website all have refundable access fees. These refunds are put in place to help those that complete the training to earn money instantly instead of taking a loss on training that turns out ineffective. A 60-day refund is offered as an incentive to help online workers or entrepreneurs start earning money without the fears of losing training fees to learn new skills.

On the sun: Massive solar flare unleashed (+video)

An X-class flare erupted on the sun on Monday, according to scientists. These flares, sometimes interfering with radio signals here on Earth, are likely to continue as the sun approaches the peak of its magnetic activity in 2013.?

The sun unleashed a powerful solar flare late Monday (Oct. 22), releasing waves of radiation into space that have already caused a short radio blackout on Earth.

The flare came from an active region on the left side of the sun that has been numbered AR 1598, which has already been the source of a number of weaker flares. This flare was classified as an X.1-class flare.

The?flare erupted from the sunspot AR 11598?(short for Active Region 11598), and reached peak brightness at 11:22 p.m. EDT (0322 GMT this morning, Oct. 23), according to scientists working on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a space telescope that constantly monitors the sun with high-definition cameras. It ranked as an X1.8?solar flare, one of the strongest types of solar flares, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) run by NOAA and the National Weather Service.

The same sunspot produced three strong flares before this one in just the two days since it became visible from Earth's perspective. "This means more flares are probably in the offing, and they will become increasingly Earth-directed as the sunspot turns toward our planet in the days ahead," astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on?Spaceweather.com, a website that tracks skywatching and space weather events.?

Solar flares are caused when magnetic activity ramps up in certain patches, called sunspots, on the surface of our star. Scientists measure the strength of solar flares in terms of energy classes, with X-class flares the most powerful sun storms. Moderate flares rank as class M storms and can supercharge Earth's northern lights displays when aimed at our planet. Class C solar flares are the weakest of the bunch and have little effect on Earth. [Photos: Sunspots on Earth's Closest Star]

Monday's solar flare was captured in photos and video by SDO, and appears as a bright white flash coming off the sun. The flare was a short-lived type of solar eruption called an impulsive flare (as opposed to the other type, called a gradual flare).

"Impulsive flares aren't generally associated with severe space weather, and additionally, this region is still several days away from directly facing Earth from center disk," SWPC officials wrote. "Nonetheless, the potential for continued activity remains, so stay tuned for updates as Region 1598 makes its way across the visible disk."

Solar flares often release bubbles of charged plasma (called coronal mass ejections) into space that, when they impact Earth, can cause geomagnetic storms that disrupt radio communications and power grids and create especially beautiful displays of the?northern and southern lights?(auroras). This flare, however, did not unleash a coronal mass ejection, so it is predicted to cause little disruption on Earth and no special auroras. Its powerful radiation was enough, though, to briefly disrupt radios here last night.

The sun?is getting more and more active lately as it approaches an expected peak of magnetic activity in 2013. This activity naturally waxes and wanes on an 11-year weather pattern. The sun's current cycle is called Solar Cycle 24.

Don't Ignore these 5 Insights from 5 Big Online ... - Internet Works

I?ve been lucky enough to have in-depth interviews with 20 of the world?s top online entrepreneurs.

Today, I?m sharing five really important and totally exclusive insights from five of these big online entrepreneurs.

What You?ll Learn:

#1 Responsive Web Design is the Future

When we asked Jacob Cass about the ?future of web design? he said, ?responsive design would be at the top of my list.?

What is Responsive Design

A website is ?responsive? when its design adapts automatically depending on what device the site is being viewed on. ?For example, a website will change its look when you?re viewing it on a mobile device, versus a large screen,? Cass explained.

Why Responsive Design is so Important

The Internet used to be just on computer monitors. Today, it?s being viewed more than ever on phones and tablets. A May 2012 study from comScore predicts that smart phone owners will become ?the new mobile majority in the US? by the end of the year (see chart).

More and more people around the world are browsing the web on small, mobile screens and if your website doesn?t look good on an iPhone or iPad then you?re losing ground with this rising wave of users.

The Insight:

If you?re a web developer, it?s time to learn how to create responsive websites.

If you?re a website owner, make sure your next redesign includes responsive design.

If you want more insight from Jacob Cass, you can check out his blog or get Income Diarys book of interviews. Cass also identified ?HTML 5, CSS 3, web fonts and parallax scrolling? as hot web design trends on the rise.

#2 Membership Sites may be the Best Way to Make Money Online Today

Broadly, a membership site is a website that restricts access to most of its content to members only. Many membership sites are free to join, but others cost anywhere from $1 to $? per month.

Why Membership Sites are so Profitable

Matt Wolfe made $1,615.63 in January 2012 from selling 12 different affiliate products. He made a little over $62 with Adsense. Between his two membership sites (The WordPress Classroom and The Marketer?s Classroom), Wolfe raked in about $20,000 in just one month:

The best thing about this type of revenue is that it tends to be recurring. As Ryan Lee explained to us, ?instead of always having to get new customers, your job becomes taking care of the customers that you already have.?

The Challenge of Creating a Membership Site

The biggest obstacle to success with a membership site is making your exclusive content incredibly valuable. As Wolfe explained to us, ?There?s a lot of information out there for free, so you?ve got to figure out what makes your information different.?

Once you?ve convinced people to pay monthly for access, then the challenge becomes continuing to provide value to your community of members so that they?re getting their money?s worth. That could be a full-time job ? but if you?re making $20,000 per month from subscriptions like Wolfe does, then you can justify the hard work.

The Insight:

While selling ad space and products are still perfectly viable ways of earning a passive income online, creating a members-only community is more lucrative right now. If you?re willing and able to provide massive, exclusive value to your members, your reward will be a fat, reliable monthly paycheck.

#3 Low Barriers to International Business mean Huge Opportunity

A couple decades ago, the idea of hiring a personal assistant who lived in another country was ridiculous. Today, the Internet has made it possible for a team of people to work on a project simultaneously from their computers while living anywhere.

In 2005, Tyrone Shum started a business selling Dragonboat paddles online. Business was almost too good and Shum was working 60 hours a week. After reading Timothy Ferriss, Shum started outsourcing and brought down his workload to just ten hours per week.

Shum has since sold his Dragonboat business and now spends his time teaching people how to outsource work effectively.

Why Outsourcing Works

Every business owner could use a bigger staff. But if you live in The United States (like me) or in The UK (like Michael), then a skilled full-time employee will no doubt cost over $10,000 per year.

Outsourcing works because it allows a business owner to hire a staff in a country where the cost of living is much lower.

How Much Does Outsourcing Cost?

Where to Hire

Obstacles with Outsourcing

If you?ve ever had a staff, then you know managing a team is a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, if you don?t do it right, outsourcing a personal assistant or a team may be more trouble than it?s worth.

Shum recommends talking to a potential employee ?face to face? via video call before hiring to get an idea of their character. Another important step in effective outsourcing is to develop efficient systems for managing and training your staff, which Shum details in his interview.

The Insight:

There?s nothing more valuable to a business than a dedicated employee. If your business could benefit from a staff (or a larger staff) but you don?t yet have the funds to pay someone locally, outsourcing offers an incredible opportunity.

#4 Social Media is a Party

We mostly talked with Pat Flynn about his hugely successful blog on earning passive income.

But Flynn is an expert on social media ? as testified by his 58,000+ Twitter followers and?,000+ fans on Facebook? and he told us that social media is like a party.

What to Do on Social Media

?You want to approach social media like you?re at a big party. What do you do at a party? You get to know people. You get to understand who they are.?

Pat Flynn, from Web Domination 20

According to Pat, your goal on social media should be to develop a trusting relationship with your audience.

What not to Do on Social Media

Many people make the mistake of trying to use their social media pages as a platform for selling. That?s a big mistake.

The Benefit of Seeing Social Media like a Party

Flynn says that ?Facebook and Twitter have been amazingly successful at bringing in returning traffic to my site.? He also mentioned the increased brand awareness that comes with being on a site that people are on ?all the time.?

But social media is even more valuable to Flynn as an ongoing social event, an interactive community: ?It??s great because I can post questions on there and people answer. It really brings a community feel to the brand and that?s a good thing about social media. If people have questions, other people can answer for me before I even have to go there. So that really helps a lot.?

The Insight:

Even businesses should keep social media social.

#5 Business will always be about Solving People?s Problems

Derek Halpern is one of the world?s foremost experts on the psychology of blogging. We interviewed him to find out more about his popular blog Social Triggers and how to benefit from understanding what makes people ?tick? online.

But one of my favorite parts of the interview came when Halpern wasn?t talking about psychology at all. He was discussing the way people often miss what really matters when it comes to running an online business.

The Shiny Object Problem

There?s always something new to talk about on the ever-changing web. New features, new software, new sources of traffic. All of these things matter, but by their very nature they tend to be short-lived.

It?s a good idea to pay attention to opportunities afforded by the latest trends, like how Josh Dunlop has capitalized on Pinterest?s popularity to grow his photography blog. But when keeping up with the latest trends becomes your priority, you?re foolishly ignoring what really matters.

The One Thing that Will Never Change about Online Business

Some people think that you can trick people into giving you money online. Others seem to think that money will just fall from the sky after they set up their website.

The truth is more difficult but also simpler and, I think, much better: ?people will give you money online when you solve their problems.

The Insight:

If you?re not making money online, then you?re probably not doing much to solve peoples? problems.

If you are making money online but you?d like to make more, then it?s time to start looking at how you can create systems and processes that solve those problems better and more efficiently.

Get The Results Your Business Needs With These Mobile Marketing ...

A mobile marketing plan can be the key to expanding your business and increasing profits. Don?t be fooled though, as mobile marketing campaigns do require large amounts of work to be effective. You probably do not know how to jump-start your mobile marketing efforts. Don?t fret, the things you need to understand for mobile marketing are listed below.

Implement dedicated short code into your mobile marketing program. Although it costs a bit more, it is a wonderful way to protect your company name. This can provide you with legal coverage as well.

No matter how advanced smartphones get, remember that mobile web browsing is just not as easy as going online with a computer. By checking how your ad looks on a mobile device, you can ensure it will be more effective. Simpler pages translate better to mobile devices and may show up as a more simple page on a regular computer. This is okay as long as it is accessible to both types of users.

Keep in mind that there can be different levels of mobile customers because of various outside influences; also note that once the entire market changes then customer base changes as well. Technology can drive business away, so you have to be on top of every new release out there if you want to remain competitive.

A very beneficial thing to use when setting up a mobile marketing campaign is social media. Have people TwitPic your store or share a deal on your website, and reward them with a contest entry or coupon. This will get people talking about your company or website with their mobile friends.

If you want more customers in the local area, include mobile friendly maps within your website. These maps enable customers to easily locate your business with their mobile device. They will be especially useful when customers are searching for businesses in their vicinity.

Mobile marketing messages should include a discount code or a promotional offer. Customers who receive a message that includes an incentive like a discount, are more inclined to visit your site to see what you have to offer.

By implementing the use of QR codes, you can broaden your customer base as you offer easily accessible information to customers. These codes are an effective way to reach your customers with coupons and promotions. Your customers can easily use these codes with their cellphones. By using QR codes, you will be able to reach customers easily and quickly with relevant information.

It?s important to have your social networking links on your website. Today, people are very into social networking, so giving them another option to find you will be good for your business. Customers typically won?t search for your company?s social media profiles, but if they are aware you have a profile on one of their social media sites, they will likely take a look to see what you have to say.

When you are promoting a big sale, that is the perfect time to send out a mobile alert to your clients. Just be sure not to wake them up. It will give your clients a gentle nudge and remind them that you have an event happening that they may be interested in.

Check to verify that your mobile web site works on every popular mobile web browser in use. Your messages should work on all mobile devices no matter the platform. It?s always easier to send one simple, universal message than to devise a different message for each type of communication device. Mobile marketing works very well with the ?Keep-It-Simple-Stupid!? philosophy.

You should put your mobile marketing business in with similar media available to you on the web. Your mobile website should feature mobile-relevant material, designed to draw readers and integrated for participation with the rest of the site. People enjoy interacting and are more likely to buy products at sites that engage their senses.

Investigate your target market. Know them and what their preferences are before you spend lots of money on mobile marketing. Determine whether phone or computer messages will be more effective. Which operating systems do they use for their phones? Take the time to learn about your customers, and you will better be able to connect with them.

To get the results you are looking for, you will need to give your customers an incentive. A good way to attract customers is to give them an incentive to visit your site. Possible incentives can include weather alerts, promotional codes, or local event information. You can offer coupons to increase the participation of your consumers, increasing the success rate of your campaign.

Create a mission statement to keep yourself on track and to let customers know what you intend to accomplish through mobile marketing. Adhering to the principles that are important to you will keep your business running smoothly.

For a greater marketing effect, include as much detailed information as possible at one time. You can use direct mail that lets them know there?s about to be a sale, for example. Then send out an email about a week before your event, and a text as an event reminder about an hour before it starts.

Creating any mobile app that includes a great deal of helpful information that pertains to your niche can be a great strategy for mobile marketing. Applications that give helpful tips and information are very popular. Links inside your app to related products and other services can be included so that you can increase your sales. If you don?t want to do this, you can directly profit by selling the app.

Use a Multimedia Messaging Service to send out coupons to get new customers or to reward your current customers. Incorporate discount codes to make your coupons more attractive. A specific tracking code links these promotions to your mobile website. The use of promotions like coupons help to retain loyal customers and attract new ones.

Before your company decides on creating their own mobile app, make sure it?s something that is needed by your customers. If it is a useless or annoying app, it could be ignored by your prospects or potential prospects.

Make sure that your existing mobile marketing campaign is doing well before trying to formulate a new one. To calculate the success you are getting, you should check your campaign longevity and not the sales numbers. To build a plan you will want to look far into the future.

Get the word out about your mobile marketing campaign as a method of tapping into special offers and discounts. Make sure that your other advertising efforts, online and in print, point out your mobile campaign?s existence. If consumers perceive your campaign as relevant and useful, they will be far more likely to go along with it. Show it as something fun and popular way for them to stay updated about what you offer.

Do not send irrelevant texts to your customers. Every message you send them should be relevant and useful. Some mobile marketing campaigns actually failed when their business began to text random things to their customers. Customers expect to receive information from you, not humorous messages that a close friend might send.

If you run a business online, you are most likely aware that there are free apps available to offer to your visitors. However, do you realize that you can easily create your own apps? Offering your own unique app will help to improve your business and take full advantage of mobile marketing. Your application could offer a number of features.

So, as you have seen, it is true that mobile marketing requires research, work, and effort to start bringing in the profits. It is also accurate that in order to see results that you have to keep at it. Keeping the aforementioned tips in mind, you are well on your way to being successful with it.

A Rant on Typography and Spacing

Typography and Spacing

Listen up, internet ? and I?m speaking to a lot of you people, yo!

There comes a time when 12px font size and 10px of padding around your content is simply a no-no. In other words, styling your website this way is now becoming a faux pas.

It?s your responsibility to serve up a good experience for your visitors. Now before I go on, I?ll show some examples of what I?m talking about ? so that it?s crystal clear.

M?kay?

Here?s an example of bad typography ? the kind that kills little puppies late at night:

Bad Typography

Here?s an example of good typography ? the kind that makes little angels gets their wings:

Good Typography

To illustrate the differences, here are the font stacks for each respective example:

Sorry, little puppies?

.bad-typography p {     font-family: Arial, Tahoma, sans-serif;     font-size: 12px;     margin: 0 0 10px;     padding: 10px; }

Woohoo, angels?

.good-typography p {     font-family: 'Lato', sans-serif;     font-size: 16px;     margin: 0 0 25px;     padding: 30px; }

Can you see the difference between the two? Yeah, that?s what I?m thinking. Me too.

Customizing CSS to make this kind of change on your website is a really an easy thing to do. It shouldn?t take more than a few minutes, if that ? so go do it NOW!

If you want to save the world, one squinting eye at a time, stand up and make a difference. Go out and get yourself something from Typekit or hook yourself up with something (and they are free, might I add) from Google Web Fonts.

Not sure which combination of fonts to use? Well I got ya covered.

Now repeat after me? ?I will care about typography and spacing on my website.?

Say it again. And again. And again.

Follow that up by saying? ?16px font is the new 12. 30px (at least) padding is the new 10.?

After you?ve spruced up your typography and spacing, please take a few minutes to read about another something important ? responsive web design.

Trust me, your visitors will love you for it.

Partnering for Success | Ben Windle

Despite the modern convenience of electronic communication and the popularity of social networking sites, it seems many people today have difficulty getting past surface level and developing lasting friendships. Many admit they are lonely and don?t feel connected, describing themselves as relationally incomplete.

Many people also seem to lack a sense of community ? having somewhere they feel they belong to; where they can interact with others face to face.

Are we losing the skills needed to develop strong close relationships that last the test of time? The truth is: we can?t achieve a whole lot on our own ? we need to join with others in every area of life.

When difficulties arise within a partnership it may seem easier to walk away than to stick with it and work through the problems. Our culture seems to encourage walking away from difficulties.

  • ?It is easier to walk away from a friendship when you are offended.
  • It is easy to just walk away from a church when you don?t like something
  • It can feel easier to walk away form a marriage that is in crisis.

?

Maybe we don?t fully understand or value the long term benefits of lifelong partnerships ? ones built on mutual principles, character and trust. Learning the keys to sticking together can unlock great potential.

?

Philippians 2:25?30 (NKJV) Yet I considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, but your messenger and the one who ministered to my need;

At a time when Paul was imprisoned, unwell and unsure of his own future survival, he chose Epaphraditus to deliver his letter to the Philippians because of the strong relationship they had built over time. Paul needed someone proven, reliable and trustworthy ? someone he knew would get the job done. Paul had helped Epaphroditus recover from serious illness, trained him, and over time a strong bond of respect and trust had grown between them.

Paul describes Epaphroditus as his:

  • brother
  • fellow worker
  • fellow soldier

Here we have a model for success for relationships in many areas, including family, friendships, career endeavours, church involvement and ministry. Here we see a relationship that goes far deeper than just surface level, with various layers built of commitment into it over time.

A Brother: speaks of a family bond, denoting closeness and common attributes, commitment, mutual protection, strength, a common lineage and heritage

?

The story of David and Jonathan comes to mind. These two had a brotherly bond, and made a strong and lasting pact together, despite the fact that Jonathan?s father wanted to kill David and also David was set to take the throne that could have been Jonathan?s. (1 Sam 18)

?

?A Fellow Worker: represents more than lip-service ? it speaks of action and productivity ? someone who will roll up their sleeves and help to get the job done. Regarding church, it denotes those who get involved in helping out rather than just talking about what needs to be done. There?s always plenty to do, but not everyone wants to do the work.

?

Matt 9:37-38 Then He said to His disciples, ?The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few. 38 ?Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest. (NKJ)

A Soldier: the fighter. There will be times in relationships when you will need to contend for them ? not with the other party, but to keep the relationship moving forward. This applies to friendships, marriages, families and at church. This seems to be an aspect we?ve forgotten. In the heat of battle, it can seem easier to bail out rather than persisting until problems have been overcome. Like soldiers, we need to pursue victory!

To be successful we need to link up with others. Paul knew this. He had very little in prison, but one thing he had was his partnership with Epaphroditus ? more than a surface level friendship; a relationship with depth, built on layers of strength.

?

Invest in your relationships and you will reap the benefits. As you become the friend others need they will be more likely to be there for you in your time of need.

Easing restrictions and barriers could improve African food trade

A report by the World Bank found that easing fees, rules, and border restrictions could help Africa's food crisis, and could also lead to economic growth.

By Lesley Wroughton,?Reuters / October 24, 2012

Farmer Bedlu Mamo, stands in the middle of a field, on his half hectare wheat farm near Debre Zeit, in Ethiopia?s Amhara region on Oct. 10. The World Bank says Africa could improve food shortages by easing cross-border restrictions.

Africa could avoid food shortages if it reduces the tangled web of rules, fees and high costs strangling regional food trade and by putting large swathes of uncultivated land to productive use, a World Bank report said on Wednesday.

Just 5 percent of Africa's cereal imports are now provided by African farmers, according to the report released on the eve of an African Union summit on agriculture and trade in Ethiopia.

"Too often borders get in the way of getting food to homes and communities which are struggling with too little to eat," said Makhtar Diop, World Bank vice president for Africa.

The bank estimated that 19 million people are in danger of hunger and malnutrition in West Africa's Sahel region. Yet, removing cross-border restrictions could help avoid food crises if farmers were allowed to trade more easily with each other and get food to communities facing shortages.

In addition, the World Bank estimated that fewer restrictions on food trade could generate an estimated $20 billion in annual earnings for African governments.

Food trade barriers also increase the cost to the consumer and the farmer, the World Bank said. For example, farmers on holdings in Africa who sell surplus harvest typically receive less than 20 percent of the consumer price of their produce, with the rest being eaten up by various transaction costs and post harvest losses.

"This clearly limits the incentive to produce for the market," the World Bank said.

Soaring global food prices in 2008, which triggered social unrest in several African countries, highlighted the problem of decades of underinvestment in agriculture in Africa. It also stimulated interest among investors in Europe, the Middle East and Asia in Africa's untapped farming potential. Fears of land grabbing also increased.

The World Bank said high transport costs were an impediment to more food trade across Africa, especially for small farmers. While poor roads and lack of infrastructure are a problem in Africa, transport cartels are also common with little incentive for investment in modern trucks.

Countries in West Africa could halve their transport costs within 10 years if governments undertook policy reforms that spurred more competition, the World Bank said. Roadblocks and bribes at border posts also add to the cost of getting food to markets.

The World Bank report said yields for many crops in Africa are a fraction of what farmers are achieving elsewhere in the world. More food trade in Africa could help raise yields, spread new technology and create jobs, it added.

The Bank said rules and regulations are preventing African farmers from using higher yielding seeds and better fertilizers. In some countries it can take two to three years for new seed varieties to be released, even if they are being used elsewhere in Africa.

"The challenge is how to create a competitive environment in which governments embrace credible and stable policies that encourage private investors and businesses to boost food production across the region," said Paul Brenton, World Bank economist and main author of the report.

The End All Guide To Affiliate Marketing And Making Money Online ...

Firstly, know that this article is not a comprehensive ?welcome to affiliate marketing? guide. I will not spend much time going over the basics, but will spotlight the actual methods you need to make money ? with a bit of pertinent background to help you know the reasons behind these methods. You beginners will find this information invaluable and stimulating. You practiced marketers will find this information accurate and refreshing, while also learning some astonishing new thoughts to use in your everyday endeavors. So, let?s continue.

Nearly everyone that makes money on the internet (even the millionaires) do so through affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is a means of promoting web businesses in which an affiliate is rewarded for every visitor, subscriber, customer, and/or sale provided through his/her efforts. Compensation or commission may be made based on a certain value for each Impression (CPM), click (Pay-per- click), registrant or new customer (Pay-per-lead) or (Cost-per-Acquisition / CPA), sale (usually a percentage, Pay per sale or revenue share), or any combination of them.

In very small English; there are literally hundreds of thousands of affiliate programs on the web featuring tens of millions of products ranging from magazine subscriptions to life insurance and every conceivable thing in between. An affiliate is essentially a salesperson whose job is to send people to a merchant?s website. When a predetermined ?action? or sale is made, the affiliate is paid a commission. It?s the same as being a salesperson in retail, only online. I will teach you more about the actual application of affiliate marketing later in this chapter.

Another vital attribute of an affiliate program is its? compensation model. This may have an impact on which advertisers you choose to join and how you go about promoting them. It will surely have an impact on how much money you will make. Here is a breakdown of the various compensation models that affiliate advertisers utilize.

Pay-per-impression (PPI) / Cost-per-thousand (CPM)

Cost-per-mil (mil/mille/M = Latin/Roman numeral for thousand) impressions. Publisher gets from Advertiser $ x.xx amount of money for every 1000 impressions (page views/displays) of the ad. The Ad can be text , rich media, but in most cases, the ad is a banner running across the top, or down the side of a website.

Pay-per-click (PPC) / Cost-per-click (CPC)

Cost-per-click. Advertiser pays publisher $ X.XX amount of money, every time a visitor (potential prospect) clicks on the advertiser?s ad; it is irrelevant (for the compensation) how often an Ad is showed. Commission is only due when the Ad is clicked. The PPC model is used by Google AdWords, Miva and other providers. These are the ads that you see running along-side search results and many web-pages out there.

Pay-per-lead (PPL) / Cost-per-action/acquisition (CPA) / Cost-per-lead CPL)

Cost-per-action (CPA). Cost-per-Lead (CPL). Advertiser pays publisher $ X.XX in commission for every visitor that was referred by the publisher to the advertiser (web site) and performs a desired action, such as filling out a form, making an account or signing up for a newsletter. This compensation model is very well loved with online services from internet service providers, cell phone providers, banks (loans, mortgages, credit cards) and subscription services.

Pay-per-sale (PPS) / Cost-per-sale (CPS)

Cost-per-sale (CPS). Advertiser pays the publisher a percentage (%) of the order amount (sale) that was made by a customer who was referred by the publisher. This model is by far the most common compensation model used by online retailers that have an affiliate program. This form of compensation is also referred to as Revenue sharing.

Pay-per-call (no abbreviation exists yet)

This is a new compensation model. No official abbreviation exists yet. Advertiser pays publisher a $ X.XX commission for phone calls received from potential prospects as response to a specific publishers? ad. Recently developed call-tracking technology allows to make a bridge between online and offline advertising. Pay-per-call advertising is still new and in its infancy.

Choosing a Model:

As you can see, there are advantages and disadvantages to the various compensation models. This can (and should) be decisive in your selection of which affiliate program to join, but depends largely on what you are promoting and how you choose to go about promoting it. For example, the paid surveys program Survey Adventure, pays out an extremely high .50 per double opt-in lead (CPA). The action; signing up with the company is free, so obviously, the program converts very well, but you must provide many leads in order to make a substantial amount of money. The real money is in pay per sale programs (PPS). If you have a excellent product and a sound marketing plot, the money will come.

There are many other aspects, facts, advice and information that I could share with you on the subject of affiliate marketing, but we don?t want to get too far into it. So I will briefly cover a couple of subjects quickly that apply to what I feel you will really need to know and what you will be employing in your money-making endeavors.

Web 2.0

The rise of blogging, interactive online communities, article directories, simple web sites and other new technologies and are forming the new Web 2.0. These new technologies have impacted the affiliate marketing world in a very huge way. Making a presence online used to take months as well as a number of trained professionals. Nowadays, it is quite possible for newcomers to (by themselves) ?set up shop? literally overnight and with very small experience. Also, this new media allows merchants to get closer to their affiliates and improved communication between each other. What this means to you, is that you can be on your way to becoming a super affiliate master as soon as you end this guide!

Trademark Bidding / SEO

Affiliates were among the earliest to adopt Pay-per-click advertising when the first PPC search engines. In 2000 Google launched their PPC service AdWords which is responsible for the wide spread use and acceptance of PPC as an advertising channel. Since then, a large number of advertisers have adjusted their affiliate program terms to prohibit their affiliates from bidding on those types of keywords. Though we will not go into PPC Marketing, you must know that some trademarks, such as the term ?eBay? are heavily restricted because of this.

One area that has not been hit by new restrictions is SEO or ?Search Engine Optimization?. Later, I will be teaching you how to make profiles that will trick Google and other search engines into indexing them as relevant websites and list them in top search results. Sign up for AdWords and Miva. I will show how to use these later in the guide.

Why Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is driven by entrepreneurs who are working at the forefront of internet marketing. Affiliates are the first to take advantage of new emerging trends and technologies where established advertisers do not dare to be active. Affiliates take risks and ?trial and error? is probably the best way to describe how affiliate marketers are operating. This is also one of the reasons why most affiliates fail and give up before they ?make it? and become ?super affiliates? who generate ,000 and more in commission (not sales) per month.

You will not earn the right to call yourself an affiliate marketer overnight. You will have to work (relatively) hard and innovatively to make the kind of money that you want, but know that if you do, the rewards are very large and there for your taking. Never give up!

Very few publishers handle their affiliate programs in house. Most affiliate programs are set up and managed by large affiliate networks. Most of my affiliate programs are set up and maintained by the affiliate network ClickBank, which is the largest affiliate network on the web. Some networks do not have qualification criteria, but most do.

The majority of this online guide will focus on marketing strategies for ClickBank affiliates, but here is a small list of the top affiliate networks that all of the professionals belong to and you should apply to.

The ?Huge 4? Affiliate Networks

ClickBank connects over a hundred thousand affiliates with thousands of information product vendors offering a huge array of downloadable products, mainly eBooks. Because it is cheap and simple for merchants to join, the quality of the products provided can vary. ClickBank is also a fantastic place to search for unexploited niches.

Commission Junction (or ?CJ?) is another very well loved affiliate network. CJ brings together affiliates and product vendors, but also offers physical products for its affiliates to promote. CJ has many large brand names on its site, and is very well established. It is free to sign up, but most vendors are selective of who represents them.

LinkShare features more than 600 merchants. You?ll find mostly huge name and well established companies, such as Wal-Mart, Foot Locker, and Apple iTunes. Merchants are selective in representation!

Performics is a highly professional site with very well known brands. Performics? clients include: Orchard Bank, Office Max, Activa Sports, Barnes&Noble, Fossil, and more than 200 other huge name, huge business advertisers. Performics is owned by DoubleClick. Armatures need not apply, but may try.

Getting Paid By The Networks

Most affiliate networks require that you reach a ?payment threshold? before they will release your first payment. While the amount usually varies from network to network, exactly how they pay you is pretty much your choice. Your three choices that you have are Check via mail, Direct Deposit and PayPal. I do not like to wait for checks so I set most of my accounts to direct deposit on payday. You may set your affiliate accounts to deposit your earnings directly to the card. This saves you the week of delivery time on the checks and the two week waits for the out of state checks to clear.

PayPal is also a fantastic option, but not all affiliate networks offer payment via PayPal. It works exactly like direct deposit. Just check your account on payday to find the money there. You may also set up a merchant (business) account like I did so that you can get a PayPal Debit card. Again, it works just like a bank. Oddly enough, when I applied for my card the interest that I was (and still do to this day) earning on my money was higher than any bank I have ever heard of. Nearly up there with CDs, but that?s another tale.

I like to set up my finances this way so that I always have affiliate earnings separate from the other earnings that I associate with my normal bank accounts. Also, when Uncle Sam questions me about my income at the end of the year, I don?t have to worry about gathering paystubs or the like. I can just print out my account history for two accounts. Really, how you get paid is up to you, but as far as I know, quick and free is always better.

ClickBank connects over a hundred thousand affiliates with thousands of information product vendors offering a huge array of downloadable products, mainly informational eBooks. Because it is cheap and simple for merchants to join, the quality of the products provided can vary. ClickBank is also a fantastic place to search for unexploited niches.

Why ClickBank

If you are wondering what an ?information product? is, you have one in your hands (or at your fingertips) right now. Information products include e-books, video tutorials, audio teleconferences, software, etc. ? fundamentally anything that comes in a digital form.

To keep it simple; the first thing that you will do is sign up with ClickBank, get a free affiliate account and look for products you want to promote. Whenever you get a sale, your account is credited with your affiliate commission and checks are mailed out every two weeks (once you break the small minimum sale threshold).

The reason that ClickBank is so well loved is the large commissions. Since ClickBank specializes in information products, the product vendor?s costs are minuscule and large commissions are passed on to affiliates ? often as much as 50-75%. In most cases, it is far simpler to make a lot of money online earning 50% of a sale than 5% of one (which is what you will get with many products on other networks such as Commission Junction and LinkShare). For these reasons, the majority of this guide will be focused on strategies for ClickBank affiliates.

ClickBank Marketplace

One section of ClickBank that you will be visiting frequently during your time as a marketer is the ClickBank Marketplace. The ClickBank marketplace lists the products that are currently being sold by publishers. Once you have found a product that you want to promote, you simply enter your ClickBank name to receive your hop-link. This will track your sales.

When looking for a product to promote, you are going to base your choice on results of your target market criteria. You may for example, click on ?money and employment? and search for ?Make Money Online?, in which you will find too many results to count, but of course you can narrow that down to your target market by being more specific. Search for something like ?Affiliate Marketing Beginners?. Once you have a list of potential products you will be searching for products by the following vital factors:

$ /Sale: The amount of money (minus refunds) that network affiliates have earned per sale in the past.

%/Sale: The percentage of profit that is paid to affiliates per sale. Most product vendors at ClickBank pay 25% to 50%. Most vendors looking to sell a lot of their products pay 75%, regardless of quality or other factors.

% Referred: The percentage of product sales that were generated by affiliates rather than the vendors own promotions.

Gravity: Gravity in small represents the popularity of a product ? (the amount of affiliate sales have been made recently). Just because a product may be more well loved than the other does not necessarily mean that the product is making more money for its affiliates.

The products are arranged by their popularity. You may review the above factors as well, so you can click on the product title to have a look at the ?pitch page?. You may find something you like and choose to promote it as an affiliate.

What To Sell

There are a many ?gurus? out there that will all tell you how to promote the most well loved products on ClickBank, but the truth is that not too many of them have anything fantastic to share. They will tell you about AdWords, article writing and scamming people into buying the highest priced products you can find, all of which will cost you quite a bit of money to get started. AdWords alone these days costs a fortune to ?play? in.

Here is what I say you need to do. Don?t try to go onto ClickBank and find the highest selling products to promote. Find something that appeal to your target market. Believe me when I tell you, that you can find products on ClickBank related to anything and everything, all offering affiliates fantastic commissions.

A fantastic example would be the World of Warcraft player?s niche. This game has got to be the most massively multiplayer game in the world and one of the most well loved. Personally; I reckon that it is for geeks, but many of my college friends delight in playing it, ahem, ?living it?.

When you search ClickBank for ?Warcraft?, you will find quite a few excellent products and about four that I would consider ?fantastic?. (Update: What was a ?few? products are now a few pages of them. These things must be selling.) When you search Google for ?Warcraft?, you get 10,610,000 results. On the well loved social network Myspace, there are more than 3124 Warcraft groups, with the top group featuring 40,000 members.

This goes to show that with a minimal amount of research into a niche with ClickBank, you cannot go incorrect. I was quite literally going to save this niche for myself and use a different example for this, but then I started to feel greedy and I want this method of marketing to work for you. So, if you are the first one reading this guide, you already have a head start, but don?t be surprised to find this niche swamped soon after.

Commission Junction (or ?CJ?) is another very well loved affiliate network. CJ brings together affiliates and product vendors, but also offers services and physical products for its affiliates to promote. CJ has many large brand names on its site, and is extremely well established. It is free to sign up with the network, but most vendors are selective of who represents them. Most often, a website with substantial targeted traffic is a requirement of vendors.

Instead of a ?marketplace?, Commission Junction arranges its advertisers in its ?Advertiser List? and you may only promote advertisers once you have been approved to be one of their ?publishers? which is what CJ calls its affiliates. Below is a list of the paid survey advertisers that I work with. Notice how there is a ?date accepted? column? This goes to show that I grew my business relationships over time.

Network Earnings: which is like ClickBank?s $ /sale feature and represents the amount of money (minus refunds) that network affiliates have earned per sale in the past.

$ /Action: Like ClickBank, many products on CJ offer a percentage or dollar amount that you earn per sale of a product, but with CJ you may also sort by the amount earned per lead and click (CPC and CPA).

EPC: Commission Junction also has a few different ways of representing the popularity of an advertiser. The most vital of these is done by showing the ?EPC? or ?earnings per click? ratio which is represented by how much money is earned on average per 100 clicks. So a 7 day EPC of 24.69 which is the case of Greenfield Online means that in the last 7 days of 8.9 of the last 100 visitors to the site, have signed up with Greenfield and the referring affiliates have made money. That may not sound ?fantastic?, but in the world of affiliate marketing, it?s ok.

What To Sell

Just about all of the advertisers that I work with via Commission Junction use the CPA compensation model. One of the most well loved markets both on Commission Junction and among web-surfers right now is paid surveys. Because CJ offers the option of CPA, a fantastic number of survey companies have signed up with them.

Commission Junction has some of the best converting free to join CPA programs on the net such as the paid surveys program Survey Adventure. It pays out an extremely high .50 per lead (CPA). Once again, this is a high converting program because sign up with the company is free. It may seem that .50 is not a very high payout. That?s right to an extent. You may have to send a excellent amount of traffic to this company to see fantastic results. With CPA the desired action that you want your visitors to complete is free for them, so the profits should come quickly.

But Remember Your Target Market

At first glance, it may look like the Network Earnings should be the deciding factor in what you will promote, but I assure you, it is not. Your target market should always be the deciding factor in what you choose to promote. Because paid surveys are so well loved among college students, such programs convert very well.

Once again, you really need to do just a bit of research to find out what will appeal most to your target market.

I am not going to get into this on an in-depth level. I am just going to say it; and you had better remember it. The best way to make money selling ANY product or service of someone else?s is to pre-sell it and the best way to do this on the web is by making a simple website that may consist of no more than a presales page. It is probably the simplest and most effective one webpage in any webmasters arsenal. Often in a ?product review? format which has become wildly well loved ever since the release of a number of small and sweet eBooks. The presales page can often take on many other formats such as customer testimonial, anti-scam and programs database page just to name a few. In the end, all of these are simply teasers of a product or products that are so effective, a visitor cannot wait to buy the product(s) that you are promoting. I am not claiming this to be the only method of selling, just the most effective for you.

Now a fantastic many ?gurus? want to take credit for the key components of an effective sales-page, but the methods and theories of pre-selling have been around longer than computers. It?s just a matter of bringing them to the attention of potential webmasters while teaching how to easily implement them, so, here they are, the key components of an effective website:

The Attributes of A Successful Website

Give Visitors Hope: Every single day, people buy things. If what they buy is not meant to simply keep them alive, such as food, the product that they buy is meant to improve their life in some way. They hope that buying ?the next best thing? will lead them to ?the next best stage? in their lives. Take you for example. You are reading this in the hopes that you may apply the methods I am showing you to make money on the internet; and this money would undoubtedly improve your life. Here?s a shocker: Why do you reckon I wrote it? Because I want to make money and build a name for myself by helping others make money online, thus, improving my life.

I have found ?how to make money? informational products to be the best selling on the web, but there are many products that this can apply to. Even in a not so life altering sense. I recently saw a offer where users can ?download a vast array of media and games ready to be played on the iPhone? and it was selling like crazy. I don?t care for the ?locked? iPhone or Apple for that matter, but the thing insanely well loved among the techies and status seekers. Anyway, these people are hoping that this product will give them an entertainment on the go, thus improving their commutes or whatever, and in some small way, their lives. When you make your presales page you will feed on this need for hope. If you choose to take the product review approach, tell visitors how ?your? product is so much better than the others. If you go with the customer testimonial format; (which I suggest if you choose to market ProfilesToProfits), tell them how this product has changed your life and how it will do the very same for them.

Make Urgency: In my experience, both personal and professional, the average web browser has the attention span of a goldfish. To combat this problem, a fantastic presales page must make a sense of urgency in the visitor. Let it be known that for whatever reason, the visitor must continue to stay on your page, read the entire thing and when they end, they must buy your product because if they don?t than they are missing out on the one thing that could have changed their life forever. Did you see that? I just tied in this urgency with the first component of a successful presales page and in doing so; I have both made more hope and a more effective sense of urgency.

Many people try to do this by putting discount deadlines on their products. ?Buy in the next ten minutes and blah blah?.? this coming from the supposed ?pros? and ?gurus?. Click the back button, and then the forward button to see the same deadline. People see right through this these days. It is content that makes urgency. It is the manner in which you present your product and how you play on the many factors of an effective presales page. Once again, you must make the impression that they must buy your product because if they don?t than they are missing out on the one thing that could have changed their life forever.

Be an Authority: Appearance is everything. Whether you know anything about your product or not, you must appear to the visitor as the most informed, educated and trustworthy person regarding this product on the face of the earth. You will NEVER sell a product using the presales page format if the user feels that you do not know what you are talking about. Study up on your product, use this product yourself. Turn yourself into the one person to talk to regarding this product. If that is too much work, find somebody who knows what you ought to and pay them to help you appear as an expert. I cannot stress this enough. This may be the most vital piece of the presales page puzzle. If the visitor thinks that you are and idiot or that you don?t know what you are talking about, they will not buy from you, unless of course, they are an idiot!

Optional Components

The first three components of an effective sales page/website are not optional. If you choose to build a website and you do not factor these components in, you will not make it online. You will fail. Below are a few optional components that you can add to your website. Sometimes these components will work for you, other times they will not, so reckon hard on whether or not implementing them will ultimately benefit your cause, or hurt it.

Appear Unbiased: This is the most effective way of gaining a visitor?s trust second only to your being an authority on the given topic. Most of the time, appearing unbiased is a tactic used by database sites. I recall a site that I went to when I first became interested in affiliate marketing (I was 16). It was a database of products to sell online. At the time, it just looked like a database. I later found that just about all of the programs listed were multi-level-marketing schemes, which means that if I signed up with one of the programs that was on this site and made a sale, the owner of the site would make money as well. No, there is nothing incorrect with this. MLM is far from a scam as many like to slander. The ones who give it a terrible name just suck at it.

Back to the point; If a visitor comes to your site and becomes under the impression that you ?just want to help?, they are far more likely to buy from you than if have a sales pitch at every turn. Review a product or products. Set up a product database. Help people avoid internet scams (you will read more on that next). Do whatever you must to make it look like you are their helpful friend. They don?t have to know that you will be making a commission from a buy that they make.

Strike Dread: This is another tactic that has gone mainstream since the release of ?The Rich Jerk? and works best when used to promote products that belong to a saturated market, such as the ?how to make money in real estate? eBook market and I have found it to be terribly overdone lately, especially by users of Google AdWords and other pay-per-click methods of promotion.

The thought here is that you are out to convince people that there will be tribulation down the road for them if they choose to go with any product besides yours. Most people who endeavor this plot have simple anti-scam websites that consist of no more than a page or two describing the horrors of a particular market. They tell visitors that there are so many scams out there that they should not sign up for any program, unless of course, the visitor signs up for the one(s) that they are promoting (which pay the largest commissions).
