Google awards $1,000 for critical fix to Chrome

Google has updated its Chrome Web browser to version number 26, patching two serious security flaws and a number of smaller ones.

For hackers, Chrome is one of the toughest Web browsers to crack, but that doesn't mean that it's perfect. Consequently, Google offers a $1,000 reward to whomever can point out major security flaws.

One Finnish code expert earned his share recently by pointing out a huge vulnerability in Chrome's audio systems, one of the two serious flaws patched by Tuesday's update.

Google will not divulge exactly how the security flaw worked until it has finished distributing patches to the majority of Chrome users. The issue involved the "use-after-free" functionality of Chrome's Web audio player.

Use-after-free refers to how a program allocates digital memory after finishing its task. For example, playing a song in Chrome requires a certain amount of system resources.

After the song's completion, those resources have to migrate elsewhere in the browser. By taking advantage of this newly freed memory, a hacker could introduce any number of malicious bits of code.

Atte Kettunen, the code expert who found the flaw, is a security expert based in Finland, and will receive $1,000 for his contribution to keeping Chrome safe.

Google offers the same prize to anyone who can find a major flaw in its popular, lightweight browser, although Kettunen was the only one who earned the honor this time around.

Google gave other vulnerabilities lower priority, or used its internal employees to find them (the $1,000 reward only applies to outsiders). The only other high-priority fix involves a potential data leakage between multiple tabs, while less likely candidates included oddities in Chrome's dev tools and its HTML processing. [See also: 5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Google Chrome]

Chrome updates automatically for Windows users; Mac and Linux users have to update manually.

If you want the update right now, it's quite simple to acquire. Select "About Google Chrome" in the program's main menu, and it will automatically search for, download and apply the update for version 26.

Remember: If you find a security flaw in the new version, don't keep it to yourself. There could be $1,000 in it for you.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Depression | World of Psychology

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and DepressionIn this age of advanced modern medicine, it is a depressing fact that not all people suffering with a depressive illness respond to antidepressants.

The mental health charity Mind UK recently highlighted their concern that there is a serious need for a range of therapies to be made available to depression sufferers.

According to the best psychological working practices, medication is now considered to be only one option for effectively treating the illness.

Talk therapies ? otherwise known as psychotherapy ? such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have proven effective at alleviating melancholic symptoms in hundreds of research studies conducted around the world. In Australia, the Australian Psychological Society has identified a serious need for psychotherapeutic interventions in the lives of people with depression.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy. Participants work with a specially trained psychologist to make positive steps in changing their thoughts and feelings. Committing to CBT means accepting that your actions affect your emotions and reasoning. Therapists help you to learn skills and strategies for changing negative thinking. This helps many people to learn to cope with depressive illness.

A recent study in the UK, carried out over a period of 12 months, looked at the benefits of CBT for managing depression. Participants were allocated a one-hour CBT session each week for the period of the trial.

After six months, 46 percent of the group who had been previously resistant to medication reported a reduction in depressive symptoms. The study concluded that CBT can improve quality of life by reducing depression?s severity.

A 2012 study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry involved a review of Australian National Health data. Researchers became interested in the period between 2001 and 2006, when better access to psychological treatment was made available in Australia.

The study showed from 2001 to 2008, following health care reform, there was a drop in the use of antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications. CBT is currently recognized in Australia as being a viable and effective way of treating mental illnesses like depression.

It is important to note that CBT is not intended to be a substitute for medication. In many cases it will serve to complement any medicine from the family doctor or psychiatrist. However, in those for whom medication has failed, CBT offers an alternative while new medicines are being developed. Of course, not everything ? whether medication or talk therapy ? will work for everyone.

In Australia, there is still a shortage of psychiatrists. The right of psychologists to prescribe medication is now a subject for debate. If this becomes reality, the therapist will then be able to evaluate each patient?s needs, and only prescribe drugs when necessary.

In the meantime, although it may not be the best option, family physicians are able to prescribe psychiatric medications if they believe it warranted.

Pope Francis: experienced manager set for reform

By Tom Heneghan, Religion Editor

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Francis of Assisi began his saintly career following what he said was God's command: "Rebuild my Church." The new pope who took his name heard the same message from the cardinals who elected him.

The 13th-century Francis toured the Italian countryside repairing dilapidated chapels before realizing his mission was to change the whole Roman Catholic Church.

At 76, Pope Francis does not have as much time to get to work.

What the first Jesuit pope has is management experience in his native Argentina as head of the Jesuit province and chairman of the national bishops conference. As archbishop of Buenos Aires, he dealt with everything from poverty to national politics.

"He's been at the top of the organization, but he's not been tamed by that," says Rev James Hanvey, a Jesuit theologian. "In management speak, he's held to the core values. He wants us all to refocus on the core values."

Bergoglio's record shows he has strong convictions and is not afraid to take unpopular decisions. Jose Maria Poirier, editor of the lay Catholic monthly Criterio in Buenos Aires, said Church staff there described him as an "attentive, human and considerate" boss who is also demanding, has little patience for bureaucracy, and appoints talented assistants.

His predecessor Benedict's failure in this regard was partly to blame for the infighting that crippled the Curia bureaucracy and came to light in leaked Vatican documents last year.

SHAKEUP IN THE CURIA

The first hint Francis gave of plans to change the Curia came three days after his election when he reappointed its top bureaucrats temporarily rather than permanently, as Benedict did after being elected in 2005.

With his humble style, the pope has begun deflating the imperial side of the Vatican, which resembles a Renaissance monarchy with an absolute sovereign, a coterie of close advisers and Curia departments that answer to the pope but often don't talk to each other.

Francis's references to himself simply as the bishop of Rome - the position from which his papal authority flows - hints at a willingness to involve the hierarchy around the globe in running the world's largest church.

Hanvey said a first step would be to call heads of national bishops conferences around the world to meet regularly in Rome as advisers. This was proposed by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), but Popes John Paul and Benedict used it so rarely that some bishops complained they were being "treated like altar boys" rather than senior colleagues.

The Curia needs regular cabinet meetings, more international staffers to overcome its domination by Italian clerics and a full work day rather than schedules that end in early afternoon, U.S. theologian George Weigel said.

It has only two women in senior posts, another aspect of the Curia critics say needs to be changed.

One overlooked fact is that the Curia, with just over 2,000 employees, is actually understaffed. "They're overwhelmed," said one senior figure from another religion in contact with the Curia, who asked not to be named.

WAITING FOR OTHER SIGNALS

The opaque operations at the Vatican bank, known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), were widely discussed among cardinals ahead of the conclave. Francis has criticized globalization and unfettered capitalism in the past, so he may take a critical look at the bank, but he has not indicated his plans.

The book "His Holiness," which published the leaked Vatican documents last year, detailed alleged corruption, inflated prices for work in the Vatican and clashes over the management at the bank.

The Council of Europe and the Bank of Italy have criticized it for lax anti-money-laundering controls and oversight, two areas where the Vatican says it is improving.

Critics also say the Church has not compensated victims of sexual abuse enough or held bishops sufficiently responsible for covering up cases. Francis would quickly tarnish his compassionate image if he did not go beyond the apologies and meetings with victims that Benedict pioneered.

Reputed to be a theological conservative, Francis has criticized Argentina's government for legalizing same-sex marriage, opposes abortion and women priests and defends the celibacy rule for male clergy. But he has also upbraided priests who refused to baptize babies of unmarried mothers. He has admitted to being "dazzled" by a young lady while in the seminary and said he helps priests who struggle with their vow of celibacy.

All this suggests a softer edge to some of his positions. "Benedict was clearly labeled" as a doctrinaire conservative, said Italian theologian Massimo Faggioli. "It will be easier for (Francis) to say things without the audience having a ready response."

ND gears up for legal dispute on new abortion laws

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) ? North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple said his decision to sign strict new abortion laws, including the nation's toughest restriction on the procedure, was not based on "any religious belief or personal experience" and that he believes legislators have a right to ask such questions about abortion restrictions.

The Republican governor signed three anti-abortion measures on Tuesday ? including one banning abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, or when a heartbeat can be detected. By doing so, Dalrymple positioned his oil-rich state as a primary battleground in the decades-old fight over abortion rights.

Within minutes of signing the laws, unsolicited donations began pouring into the state's lone abortion clinic to help opponents prove the new laws are unconstitutional. The governor urged lawmakers to set aside cash for an inevitable legal challenge.

"Although the likelihood of this measure surviving a court challenge remains in question, this bill is nevertheless a legitimate attempt by a state legislature to discover the boundaries of Roe v. Wade," Dalrymple said in a statement, referring to the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion up to until a fetus is considered viable ? usually at 22 to 24 weeks.

In an interview later Tuesday, Dalrymple told The Associated Press that the courts opened the door for a challenge by picking a specific moment in the timeline of gestation. He also said he studied the fetal heartbeat bill and "educated myself on the history and legal aspects as best I could. My conclusion is not coming from any religious belief or personal experience."

Dalrymple seemed determined to open a legal debate on the legislation, acknowledging the constitutionality of the measure was an open question. He asked the Legislature to set aside money for a "litigation fund" that would allow the state's attorney general to defend the measure against lawsuits.

He said he didn't know how much the likely court fight would cost. But, he said money wasn't the issue.

"The Legislature has decided to ask these questions on additional restrictions on abortions, and I think they have the legitimate right to ask those questions," he said.

He also signed into law measures that would makes North Dakota the first state to ban abortions based on genetic defects such as Down syndrome and require a doctor who performs abortions to be a physician with hospital-admitting privileges.

Lawmakers endorsed a fourth anti-abortion bill last week that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy based on the disputed premise that fetuses feel pain at that point. The governor stopped short of saying he would sign it, but said: "I've already signed three bills. Draw your own conclusion."

The signed measures, which take effect Aug. 1, are fueled in part by an attempt to close the Red River Women's Clinic in Fargo ? the state's only abortion clinic.

Tammi Kromenaker, the clinic's director, called the legislation "extreme and unconstitutional" and said Dalrymple "awoke a sleeping giant" by approving it. The clinic, which performs about 3,000 abortions annually, was accepting cash donations and continued to take appointments Tuesday, she said.

"First and foremost, abortion is both legal and available in North Dakota," she said. "But anytime abortion laws are in the news, women are worried about access."

The Center for Reproductive Rights announced Tuesday that it has committed to challenging the fetal heartbeat bill on behalf of the clinic. The New York-based group already represented the clinic for free in a lawsuit over a 2011 law banning the widely accepted use of a medication that induces abortion. A judge has temporarily blocked enforcement of the law, and a trial is slated for April in Fargo.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem told the AP that lawyers from his office would defend any lawsuits that arise but an increase to the agency's budget would likely be necessary. He did not have a dollar amount.

The state has spent about $23,000 in legal costs to date defending the 2011 legislation, according to agency records obtained by the AP.

Julie Rikelman, litigation director for the Center for Reproductive Rights, said the group has provided three attorneys to argue that case. But in the recent round of legislation, the fetal heartbeat measure is the priority because it would effectively ban abortion in the state, she said.

"The impact is very, very clear," she said. "It would have an immediate and very large impact on the women in North Dakota."

Rikelman said the center also would support the clinic in other litigation, if need be and at no cost.

Kromenaker said other states have spent millions of dollars defending legislation, if the case reaches the nation's highest court. Rikelman said it's impossible to put a dollar amount on the impending legal fight in North Dakota.

"Litigation is so unpredictable," she said. "It could be very quick with a ruling in our favor."

North Dakota's law, since it would ban most abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, goes further than a bill approved earlier this month in Arkansas that establishes a 12-week ban ? prohibiting them when a fetal heartbeat can be detected using an abdominal ultrasound. That ban is scheduled to take effect 90 days after the Arkansas Legislature adjourns.

A fetal heartbeat can generally be detected earlier in a pregnancy using a vaginal ultrasound, but Arkansas lawmakers balked at requiring women seeking abortions to have the more invasive imaging technique.

North Dakota's legislation doesn't specify how a fetal heartbeat would be detected.

Doctors performing an abortion after a heartbeat is detected could face a felony charge punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Women having an abortion would not face charges.

The legislation to ban abortions based on genetic defects also would ban abortion based on gender selection. The Guttmacher Institute, which tracks abortion laws throughout the country, says Pennsylvania, Arizona and Oklahoma also have laws outlawing abortion based on gender selection.

The Republican-led North Dakota Legislature has endorsed a spate of anti-abortion Legislation this year. North Dakota lawmakers moved last week to outlaw abortion in the state by passing a resolution defining life as starting at conception, essentially banning abortion in the state. The measure is likely to come before voters in November 2014.

Dalrymple attended a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for a new diesel refinery in western North Dakota and made no public appearance to explain his signing of the abortion legislation.

Hajj Elbabboushi Questions on MWN Top Stories: Blame it on ...

By Hajj Elbabboushi

Morocco World News

New York, March 25, 2013

Morocco World News is introducing a weekly blog hosted by Hajj Elbabboushi to objectively criticize some of the top stories we previously featured. Hajj Elbabboushi is a former Moroccan teacher of English spent most his life in Morocco but retired abroad. Throughout his life, he was deceived by the media, governments and people and consequently lost confidence in all of them. Hajj Elbabboushi never believes anything he is told. He doubts everything, even conspiracy theories.

Moroccan health care system: this one shot ?RAMEDy? is not enough

Waldi Hamza (my son), how reliable are the number of beds per 1000 people and the number of physicians per 1000 people in determining the quality of healthcare received by citizens especially knowing that -for example- Moroccans? life expectancy exceeds that of Kazakhs and Azerbaijanis although they -Kazakhs and Azerbaijanis- have more doctors and beds per 1000 people?

Would it be possible that there are -relatively- few doctors and beds per 1000 people in Morocco because people do not need to go see doctors (e.g. probably because they eat healthy food, or they rely on para-medical and home medicine to resolve a lot of their health issues)?

Can we not assume (conclude?) that it is the quality of doctors which is more important, and not the number of beds and doctors?

Should we not determine if the demand for health care would increase, by investigating how many people actually used their RAMED benefits or how many Moroccans per 1000 actually go to hospitals?

A Policeman?s crime: there is no smoke without fire

Waldi Rachid, we have all heard of ex-American soldiers who kill themselves or suffer from PTSD after they return from combat. We?ve seen a lot of those cases. Now we have a Moroccan policeman who killed three innocent victims because of ?corruption,? according to his lawyer. If corruption is the real cause, would it not make sense to have a similar incident on a periodic basis? If corruption is the cause, how many cases of Moroccan policemen shooting their co-workers have we seen since independence, or since the beginning of history? Can I hit someone with my shell and blame it on pollution?

Morocco: Can justice still be bought and sold?

Waldi Youssef, may Allah accept the victims of this accident in heaven, and may He help us improve our legal system.

You have eloquently put that the driver of the Jaguar was ?allegedly driving at an insane speed,? but what made you so sure that he was drunk knowing that the only person who survived the accident went straight into coma?

Is it not true that the Jaguar driver spent two months in prison while the case was processed? If his family is so powerful and so rich, why could they not bail out their son in order to maintain his liberty while the case was being processed?

Knowing that there are big gaps between the minimum sentence, and the maximum sentence that a person convicted in a criminal case can receive in Morocco (e.g. for theft, killing, etc.), were the two months in jail plus two months probation received by the the Jaguar driver really represent a violation to the law?

If not, then would it not be more fair and efficient to petition the government to fix the law (the same way it was done after the Amina Filali case) rather than change the verdict of this case?

Lack of civility in Moroccan society

Waldi Omar, who defines civility or being civilized? Who is more civilized, those who throw garbage in the streets of Morocco, or those who pollute the universe and refuse to ratify protocols to limit pollution? Who has more values, those who ?appear civilized? or Moroccans? Who is more civilized, those who are ?shouting at each other for silly reasons,? or those who are shutting others up for life using sophisticated weaponry?

Who is less civilized? Those ?Moroccan criminals? who ?sexually harass, rape, steal, etc.? or those criminals who do not shout when driving, who treat patients very well, who read a lot, who queue when waiting and mounting the bus, but steal nations? resources?

Knowing that in America you can get punished for littering, is it not true that the best way to make people stop bad habits is to deter them through sanctions? Is it not true that ten years ago in Morocco, one would be laughed at if he/she wore a seat-belt in the city, while it is now normal -after it has been made obligatory by law- for one to buckle his/her seat-belt up?

How Morocco Would Advance: Build Strong Infrastructure

Waldi Jamal, may Allah forgive you. You scared me.

What is more important, the number of airports, or the number of good airports a nation has?

If the number of good airports is more important, then would it not be better to refer to statistics about airports with paved runways rather than the total number of airports -which you used and- which includes airports with grass and dirt runways, and may also include closed or abandoned installations?

If we consider the airport with paved runways statistics, is it not true that Morocco is doing much better than all the countries you mentioned (Morocco has one paved airport per 20,957 square kilometers while Algeria has one per 39,695)?

Bob Casey Explains Gun Control Switch After Newtown Shooting

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) explained his switch in position on gun control during a Monday morning appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," saying he thought about the Newton, Conn., shooting and realized it could have been even worse.

"When I watched more and learned more about how he killed his mother and the rage that he brought to that school ... I began to think of what could?ve happened, and not the reality but the potential," he said, according to The Hill. "He was not going to kill 20 children, but he was going try and kill several hundred and would have if he'd had the time and the capacity."

Casey announced in December that he would support gun control measures such as bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. It was a significant switch given his longtime opposition to gun control and high rating from the National Rifle Association. The change was prompted by the shooting of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, along with the shooter's mother, a massacre that has restarted long-dormant talks of further regulating guns.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced last week that he would introduce a bill to require universal background checks on gun purchases, along with several other measures. A ban on assault weapons was not included in the base bill but will be offered as an amendment.

Other Democrats -- including Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Reid -- also said their thinking on guns changed after the Newtown shooting.

Casey said he hopes other lawmakers are willing to consider supporting such measures.

"Elected official get in lanes, and on this issue you're either in one lane or the other, and there's really no middle ground even as you try to articulate a middle ground," he said on "Morning Joe." "I think that's where people are -- they just fall into their lanes and they vote the way they vote over time."

Rise of the Machines! Talking Hardware Synths w/ Richard Devine ...

Over the last few years, hardware synthesizers, drum machines, and effects seem to be making a comeback. To get some insight into this renewed movement, we speak with music producers, sound designers, instrument manufacturers and boutique retailers about the latest rise of the machines.

Over the course of the past 20 years, the computer has shaped music production more than any other technology. Moreover, the computer has taken the place of those devices in most cases, since software and computer emulations of instruments are much more affordable than hardware. Computers take up less space, are more powerful, and can house countless instruments and effects compared to a physical space. In today?s professional realm, the computer has become the center of the studio. So now, when music software can finally do everything that we always wanted it to do, why are so many producers gravitating to hardware?

The machines will rise

Rise of the Machines

Hardware music devices such as synthesizers, stomp boxes and drum machines have seen a renewed popularity in the last few years, attracting everyone from producers and sound designers to musical instrument manufacturers who are seeing a?resurgence?of interest for instruments and effects that run ?outside the box.? Ebay prices on vintage Roland gear and E-Mu samplers have been steadily rising. Guitar stomp boxes are starting to appear in more and more live electronic sets as performance devices. And then there?s the modular synthesizer?phenomenon, leading many of our peers to spend endless nights patching and noodling on custom-built oscillators and filters that can cost as much as a new car.

?It?s just generally a lot more fun to use hardware synths with knobs and patch cables. It?s more hands-on,? offers Shawn Cleary from Analog Haven, one of the United States? premier retailers for modular synth equipment and hard-to-find/boutique music gear. Cleary says he is seeing,?an increasing market for Eurorack modular gear. Patchable synths such as the Doepfer Dark Energy, Tom Oberheim SEM and the fully modular Pittsburgh Modular Foundation make fantastic gateways to an even larger Eurorack setup.?

Music Hardware for Modern Sound Design

One of the most prominent champions of hardware-based production is sound designer and producer Richard Devine, who says, ?I think there has been a big influx of producers who have taken notice to using hardware over the past few years.? Devine himself has been returning to hardware for creation more and more recently, specifically with modular gear. ?Lately I have been making music with just modular synthesizers. I originally started out working with analog synthesizers when I first began making electronic music. I then got into using computers for synthesis and grew bored after using them for the last 14 years.?

While modern recording environments allow advantages like saving and recalling presets, Devine feels that the lack of these features adds to the creative process with hardware. ?It?s sort of like creating this audio ghost that exists only for a short time. So you just try and capture and record it as many ways as possible before it disappears. I love this aspect as you don?t get too attached to the piece. I would sometimes spend months on a piece in the computer constantly trying to nitpick and redo sections over and over without ever letting go of something. With modular synthesizers you come into the mindset that you will have to pull the patch and move on. Limitations can sometimes bring out much more creativity in me.?

Devine feels that the new Eurorack movement in particular is an inspiring movement for innovation in sound: ?It?s really the wild wild west of music instrument design as of late. There are so many strange new devices and companies popping up in this format. I feel there is still so much to explore. The Eurorack format is just so fun and you can customize your system just for you. In particular I have been loving these companies: Makenoise, Harvestman, 4ms, Intellijel, WMD, TipTop audio, Doepfer and Cwejman.?

Another artist (and modular user) who is currently embracing the use of hardware in his own work is?Droid Behavior co-founder and techno producer?Drumcell,?whose album will be released on Chris Liebing?s esteemed CLR label in the coming weeks. ?I just finished my first full-length album to be released this April, and the album was made almost 90% with hardware. It was truly an inspiring process for me,? the producer explains. ?My recent return to using hardware came after being totally uninspired just looking at the computer screen and twisting knobs with a mouse. The hands-on and tactile feel of hardware is something that truly drives me to be more creative. ?Software does have the edge in areas like accessibility and it is far more convenient to just open your DAW and be able to save presets and make changes as you go, but I like the fact that with hardware, once I make something and I record it, there is no going back?it?s finished and it?s time to move on. It pushes you to get things done.?

Less Options Can Equal More Creativity

?Hardware equals power of sound, tone, knobs, sliders, control, inspiration, random patch creation, machines to hover over and feel like the master of the lab,? explains DJ Thomas White when asked why people are returning to hardware. White is one-half of production duo Natural Rhythm and a renowned?synthesis guru who feels that the computer?s endless options didn?t help his own workflow. ?The computer offered what I had always dreamed of, frankly: an endless set of options and the ability to do whatever I could think of. But you know what? I got roadblocked by options. I found myself wondering why I hit the wall with creativity at times. And to find the answer I returned to my hardware roots.?

Dubspot instructor and dub champion Raz Mesinai agrees with this idea and feels that hardware brings a more natural flow of creation. ?All technology is an extension of the body,? he explains. ?Hardware gear is having a comeback because musicians want more tactile control, which, no matter how much software companies want to push you to believe, they are not delivering.?

Touching the Past

?Some people want vintage for the sake of vintage. Others want vintage for tone. Some want hardware for esteem. It looks pretty, but damn if it doesn?t sound mean,? offers White when asked about the popularity of older Roland devices, Moog synths and other vintage gear. These in-demand and out of production instruments often fetch high prices on the resale market.

Drumcell adds that some people want to touch the history of their own musical?heritage?with these devices: ?We do go in and out of these retro stages with music and a lot of vintage and old electronic music instruments have become iconic to people. For instance the TB-303 or TR-808 are devices that you often see on T-shirts, iPhone covers, CDs , stickers and party flyers. I think many people know what these instruments are even if they don?t make electronic music and actually want to touch them.?

Hardware adds Character to Recordings

Dubspot?s Steve Nalepa combines hardware and software to achieve his signature sound

One of the reasons that so many producers are turning to hardware is to create unique sounds. In-the-box production often yields similar results while outside sources can add color to a recording and give it character. This is a tip that we hear over and over again when we speak to producers. Dubspot Ableton Live course designer Steve Nalepa champions this method, explaining his process to us:

?While Ableton serves as the hub of my studio, I have been collecting analog synths, pedals and other assorted gear over the years and I always try to incorporate them into my music. There?s something inspiring about putting your hands on an actual piece of hardware and experimenting with it, recording it, then mining for the best parts. While I utilize soft synths in just about every track, hardware devices have their own unique character and I find the combination of both works very well. Music made completely inside the box can sometimes sound too clean and digital, and lately I?ve been exploring a number of ways to give tracks a vibe: incorporating lo-fi field recordings done with a phone for example, miking an amp versus running a direct out, etc. Hit up those pawn shops, estate sales and yard sales, you might find your next secret weapon.?

This idea resonates with Drumcell as well. ?I think there is a sound to hardware that is desirable to most people and each instrument has its own texture and richness to it.?

Hardware as Inspiration

KiNK?s ?Hand Made? was the result of hardware inspiration and software execution

One artist who has been influencing the techno/house community recently is Bulgarian producer KiNK, whose YouTube channel has inspired a flock of producers to go back to basics for creation. The above video shows KiNK?s creative process for the song ?Hand Made? which he released with vocalist (not daytime TV chef) Rachel Ray on the influential?Rush Hour record label. After a few watches through his homemade videos of live house music performance you may be surprised to learn that the chart-topping producer actually uses software to create the music he releases?publicly. As he explained to Resident Advisor in a now-famous?interview from 2010,?he?s been using hardware to help find inspiration and new ideas:

?I have an inspirational part of the studio which I enjoy when I make some sounds. And the other part of the studio is just my computer with the software. Let?s say when I want to make a track, I think of the track when I am out with friends, or in bed when I am about to fall asleep. When I sit at the computer I already have some idea what I am going to do. I sit there, and I start to program. It is a very cold process; it?s not really impulsive and emotional.? -?KiNK with RA

Arturia?s MiniBrute ? An Indication of Things to Come?

One of the biggest telltale signs of this movement into hardware is software maker Arturia?s release of the MiniBrute?an all-analog monophonic synth that communicates with the computer as well as MIDI and CV devices. The synth immediately took off with critics and consumers at its announcement during NAMM 2012, and has been out of stock in most places until very recently.

?The MiniBrute has proven that musicians do want synths with an immediacy to them,? explains?Glen Darcey,?Arturia?s Head of Product Development.??You see a knob and it actually represents the position of the parameter; you turn it without the sound jumping or having to pass a zero-cross point. It is a very organic thing, and something that the modular community knows well but many others have forgotten or missed out on because the mainstream market went a different direction.?

When asked where he saw this trend of hardware going Darcey replied, ?Our feeling is that there are jobs for pure hardware, there are jobs for hardware/software hybrids and jobs for pure software. All of these are tools for an artist to create with. Different artists are inspired by different sounds, touch, feel, etc. ?Our feeling is that we want to make musically useful tools for artists. We will continue to make software, hybrids and dedicated hardware products for the market. It is great to see a return to pure analog products with the modular boom. MiniBrute was designed to work well for both the computer user or the modular user.?

Boutique Hardware and TonyLight?s LepLoop

Italian developer, designer and synth enthusiast TonyLight has been catching a wave of popularity recently by way of a recent KiNK video where the producer uses TonyLight?s LepLoop synthesizer to tweak his way into a thumping groove (above). We reached out to TonyLight to find out about the inception of LepLoop and to get his take on this rise in hardware?s popularity:

?I use the computer mostly for recording, but I?m not a fan,? he explains. ?I love tabletop instruments, small and compact. My setup fits in a backpack. Hardware instruments are more reliable and stable, modern digital synths are basically super special computers in a keyboard case. Also?at the show people like to see the performer doing something on stage and the computer forces you to stay?immobile. After getting into techno music during the 90s, I started using a drum machine and synth. In 2004 I became part of the audio/video collective?Otolab where I?met Giovanni, a hacker/DIY guy. He is an expert in analog and digital electronics. So we started thinking about a compact analog synth for live performance, a small box for playing around with.?

A Hybrid Future for Creation

YouTube Preview Image

It should be noted that in our research for this article we didn?t find any producers who are using 100% hardware for creation. There is always a computer involved and as we move to the future there will probably always be one in the recording process. But we are also starting to see more producers go outside the box for inspiration, character, and fun when the glow of a computer screen isn?t delivering.

?To be honest I really love both ends of the spectrum,? explains Drumcell. ?At the end of the day I truly believe it?s not about what you use, it?s just how you use it.?

I Dream of Wires

Future viewing: I Dream of Wires (IDOW) is an upcoming documentary about modular synthesizers that features some of the artists interviewed in this article as well as ?a vast array of others who have dedicated their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine.? We are very excited for this film?s premiere in May 2013.

T-Mobile lights up LTE in seven markets nationwide

STUB TMobile announces first LTE markets

T-Mobile's LTE rollout has been a long time coming, but as of today that network is finally live. At an event in New York City, the carrier made its initial batch of LTE cities official -- seven markets in total. Now, subscribers in Baltimore, MD; Kansas City, KS; Houston, TX; Las Vegas, NV; Phoenix, AZ; San Jose, CA and Washington D.C. will be among the first to take advantage of the UnCarrier's fully-fledged 4G network and its newly revised unlimited talk, text and data plans. Speeds on this new network, as we saw demoed just a little over a week ago, should range between 10 to 20Mbps down and 8 to 12 Mbps up -- at least, during this intro phase -- with a fallback onto HSPA+ when LTE isn't present.

To kick off adoption of this nascent network, T-Mobile's offering up a pretty attractive portfolio of handsets and high-end ones, at that. So Magenta subs or prospective carrier-switchers looking to sign up for T-Mobile's LTE can choose from the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note II and BlackBerry Z10 -- that latter two of which are currently available. And now that the UnCarrier's removed the contract chains we've all come to know and loathe, subscribers can opt to snag one of these handsets outright with an accompanying Simple Choice plan.

Privacy Will Cost You: Co-op and Condo Tax Abatement To Be ...

Buildings with lots of LLC-owned apartments like the Laureate are likely to suffer the most.

Buildings with lots of LLC-owned apartments like the Laureate are likely to suffer the most.

During the past decade, it has become increasingly popular for? home buyers?particularly those with bold-faced names?to shield their identities with LLCs and trusts. By using an LLC, a privacy-minded person can (usually) prevent sleuths from salmon-colored papers like this one from dredging up their purchase from city records and exposing how much they paid and what their new kitchen looks like.

But while such identity cloaking has become all but de rigueur for the celebrity buyer and a matter of preference for other press-averse people, the cost of privacy is poised to go up considerably. That?s because the city?s co-op and condo tax abatement, which has been enjoyed by nearly all co-op and condo owners at a sizable 17.5 percent since 1996, will no longer be available to those who own their apartments through LLCs or trusts. The change will mean considerably higher taxes for some 7,700 property owners.

This winter, the State Legislature voted to extend the condo and co-op tax abatement?which was initially enacted as a temporary measure eliminate the discrepancy between the taxes on single family homes and the much higher taxes on homes in multi-unit buildings?through June 30, 2015. But this time around, the Legislature decided to exclude pied-a-terres from the abatement program?a category which the city?s Department of Finance says includes all trusts or LLCs.

?There is no provision in the new coop/condo abatement law that allows the beneficial owner of a trust or an LLC to qualify for the benefit,? Department of Finance spokesman Owen Stone wrote to The Observer in an email explaining the policy change. ?As you know a new law was enacted last month that restricted the eligibility for the coop/condo abatement to only primary owner occupied residences. We have not changed our interpretation of the law- the law has changed. Under the previous law, there was no restriction, and LLCs and Trusts could qualify, under the new law, they do not.?

Which has not stopped many in the real estate community from slamming the policy as unfair.

?They?re penalizing people who want their privacy or the convenience of owning in a trust,? said Eva Talel, a real estate attorney at Strook & Strook & Lavan. ?For reasons of privacy, not wanting the world to know what you own is perfectly reasonable at any income level, and to throw the people out of this abatement problem seems to be fundamentally unfair.?

?I think there must be a misconception somewhere down the line that things like LLCs or trusts are for rich people, but you don?t have to be rich or advantaged to put your home in a trust,? she added, noting that given the high cost of New York real estate and its rapid appreciation over the last two decades, many New Yorkers count their home as their primary asset. Why should they be punished for trying to lessen their tax burdens in a perfectly legal way?

Even co-op boards, which are notoriously hostile to pied-a-terres (and for demanding reams of personal documentation and disclosure from potential buyers), have started acknowledging the need for trusts in estate planning. More and more of them are now allowing established residents to transfer their apartments into trusts.

?No one would have expected that there would be adverse tax consequences to buying in a trust or an LLC. There aren?t otherwise,? she said. ? I think they made a social engineering decision that these units were owned by more affluent people in more affluent co-ops and were therefore fair game.?

(Another real estate professional likened the change, coming in conjunction with larger tax breaks for less valuable co-ops and condos, to ?class warfare.?)

Ms. Talel also pointed out that the decision to give the tax benefit to only some condo and co-op owners violates the spirit of the original abatement, which was intended, in lieu of more far-reaching tax reform, to equalize the tax burden on single-family homes and those in multi-unit buildings. Townhouse owners are not subject to any restrictions or requirements, primary residence-related or otherwise, to enjoy their lower tax rates. Why should there be a different standard for co-op and condo owners?

Mary Ann Rothman, the executive director of the Council of New York Cooperatives & Condominiums, told? The Observer that the Council begged the Department of Finance to reconsider their interpretation, particularly in respect to trusts.

?We told them that 99 percent of the time, there?s an agreement between the co-op board and the trust that only the trust-holder will live there,? she said, adding that trust-holders can apply for other benefits, like the STAR program.

Ms.Rothman said that building managers are up-in-arms about the changes to the law, which will be phased in over this tax year and the next. It?s also a relatively recent shock?while the primary residence requirement has been anticipated for some time, few anticipated that trusts and LLCs would also be excluded from that category.

An additional problem is that in some condo buildings more than three-quarters of the units are owned by LLCs?a serious problem for developments that used the tax benefit for maintenance or capital improvement projects. Now, managing agents will need to either raise maintenance fees or figure out how to cover the lost income.

For its part, the Department of Finance says that its hands are tied, but that it is exploring the possibilities for extending the benefit to some trusts.

?We are continuing to review our options regarding eligibility for beneficial owners of trusts,? Mr. Stone wrote. ?We will listen to the concerns of those who have questions regarding the eligibility for beneficial owners of trusts, and will take them under consideration.?

Furthermore, the department is unlikely to hear many complaints from the property owners themselves. While LLC owners will no doubt grumble to their friends, their lawyers and to their property managers about the new ?privacy tax,? we don?t anticipate any outspoken opponents or outcries from a group that prefers to remain off the record and under the radar.

Make A Successful Marketing Plan With These Tips - We Want CSG

Internet marketing can be an extremely lucrative occupation if done correctly. Keep in mind though, you will need to make a good investment of your time if you want to be successful. Using time wisely is extremely important. Don?t start an Internet promotion business without reading these time-management tips.

Make sure you utilize social media. Set up a fan page on Facebook so that your customers can leave feedback, get news, and connect with each other. This can dramatically increase your online visibility. You can easily chat informally with all your customers using your Twitter account.

TIP! Make sure any tags on your web site are directly associated with its core content. The title of your website can determine how your customers perceive your business?s website.

Add the words ?simple? and ?easy? to your online marketing lexicon. These words will put your customers at ease, as most people do not enjoy products that are difficult to use or put together. That is a simple way to boost business.

If you issue a news release, it might drum up some internet business. If you have a knack for writing clear, concise information, it is easy to get that information published on the web. The materials will then be released to a carefully selected audience. This is a very easy method to boost your business profile.

To get the most from your Online marketing efforts, be sure you always provide original content rather than just copying what others have written. Advanced and improved algorithms used by search engines are able to detect duplicate articles and can penalize you in the long run. You need to know how to innovate.

TIP! Post customer commentary about your products on your website. People like to research what other consumers are saying about a product they are thinking of purchasing.

Offer to give a certain percentage of your business profits to charity to increase the amount of visitors. You need to make a point to note this on your site so your customers feel they are contributing. You do not have to give up a big chunk of your profits to make a difference and to improve your marketing benefits.

It?s just a fact of psychology that most people respect positions of authority. You can make use of that fact in your marketing. Don?t be afraid to let it be known that you are indeed the head honcho. Go with describing your position as the President or the CEO.

You do not have to spend all of your time with Web marketing. Strategize your approach, use your time efficiently and you will see success!

Senate Democrats on track to pass budget

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats controlling the Senate appear on track to pass their first budget in four years, promising a second, almost $1 trillion round of tax increases on top of more than $600 billion in higher taxes on the wealthy enacted in January.

The nonbinding but politically symbolic measure would protect safety-net programs for the poor and popular domestic priorities like education, health research and federal law enforcement agencies from cuts sought by House Republicans, who adopted a far more austere plan on Thursday morning.

The Democratic plan caters to party stalwarts on the liberal edge of the spectrum just as the House GOP measure was crafted to appeal to more recent tea party arrivals. The $1 trillion in new revenue would accrue over the coming decade and would be coupled with a net $875 billion in spending cuts, generated by modest cuts to federal health care programs, domestic agencies and the Pentagon and reduced government borrowing costs.

The GOP budget proposal, similar to previous plans offered by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., demonstrates that it's possible, at least mathematically, to balance the budget within a decade without raising taxes. But to do so Ryan, his party's vice presidential nominee last year, assumes deep cuts that would force millions from programs for the poor like food stamps and Medicaid and cut almost 20 percent from domestic agency budget levels assumed less than two years ago.

Ryan's plan passed the House on a mostly party-line, 221-207 vote, with 10 Republicans joining Democrats against it.

Senators braced for dozens of votes during a marathon session expected on Friday, with pessimists in the Capitol predicting a final vote on the Democratic plan in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday.

That tall stack of votes follows up a quintet of politically freighted Senate tallies Thursday night, including a move by Democrats to force a vote on the controversial Ryan budget, which was rejected by a 59-40 vote, with five Republicans joining every Democrat in opposition.

Republicans countered with a move by Jeff Session, R-Ala., putting Democrats on record in opposition to balancing the budget by the end of the decade. It failed on a near party-line vote.

Indeed, Thursday's votes demonstrated the raw politics driving the budget debate, which is more a display of party positions and priorities than an attempt to move the combatants closer together.

The dueling House and Senate budget plans are anchored on opposite ends of the ideological spectrum in Washington, appealing to core partisans in warring GOP and Democratic tribes long gridlocked over how to attack budget deficits. The GOP plan caters to tea party forces while Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray, D-Wash., crafted a measure designed to nail down support from liberal senators like Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who vehemently oppose cuts to safety net programs.

What the Ryan and Murray budgets both fail to do is reach out to the political middle, where any possible bargain would have to be forged. President Barack Obama has been reaching out to lawmakers in hopes of sparking a budget compromise that has proved so elusive.

But Murray's plan would actually increase government spending ? on top of a baseline that already assumes automatic budget increases averaging more than 5 percent a year ? after accounting for the $1.2 trillion cost of repealing the automatic cuts, known as sequestration. That means the net cuts to the deficit would amount to just a few hundred billion dollars in a federal budget estimated at $46 trillion or so over the coming decade.

Murray's position is that the automatic cuts were designed to prod Washington into action on the debt and were never intended to take effect. By that math, her budget promises $1.85 trillion in lower deficits after 10 years. She points out that Republicans on a 2011 deficit "supercommittee" used the same math when describing their proposals.

"Sequestration was not deficit reduction," Murray said. "It was there to trigger deficit reduction that would come from replacing it."

Murray's plan promises a $693 billion deficit in 2014, dropping to the $400 billion range for the middle years of the decade. While large, such deficits would hover just above 2 percent of gross domestic product, a level that many analysts see as economically sustainable.
