(AP) ? Egypt's president says the disputed constitution just approved in a referendum establishes a new republic and calls on the opposition to join a dialogue to heal rifts and shift the focus to repairing the economy.

Mohammed Morsi said Wednesday he acknowledges the "respectable" proportion that voted against the constitution drafted by his Islamist allies, but offered no concrete gestures to an opposition that has so far rejected his dialogue and vowed to fight the charter. Critics say the charter restricts freedoms and enshrines Islamic rule.

Morsi said he moved swiftly to put the constitution to a referendum to end instability and open the road for development. The opposition had urged him to postpone the vote.

How'd your holiday Photospheres turn out?

Holiday Photosphere

Google a couple weeks ago made a rather nice commercial out of the Photosphere feature, in which you make a 360-degree (more or less) panoramic photo that all gets stitched together on your phone. The holiday spot has someone taking a Photosphere in a (very) large house, with a bunch of family members in the shot.

Now, we all know Rule No. 1 of taking Photospheres is to not have anything too close to you as you take the picture. Rule No. 2 is the fewer people, the better, as people tend to move.

So I waited until things had died down a little bit. My result? Not horrible, especially since I didn't tell anyone to hold still. Check out the full Photosphere pic here. And if you took any over the holidays, be sure to tag them with #photosphere on Google+ so we can all see!

Tale of Two Sparklers: Two Sparkling Wines for the Holidays

champagne holly bruns

By Holly Bruns

-

Birthdays, weddings and anniversaries, promotions, New Year?s and pretty much any other special occasion ? or maybe just a lazy Sunday afternoon: they?re all good reasons to open a bottle of bubbly; the world goes round to the sound of corks popping. Champagne, or sparkling wine as it?s called in the rest of the world, is the elixir that provides all the excitement and hopefully over the holidays we?ll all be getting our fair share of the stuff?because, while it?s a celebratory drink, it also goes well with food and can be a terrific ap?ritif.

Sparkling wine is made in a few different ways, but the two most popular methods are the champenoise, or traditional,?and the charmat methods. The traditional way is how it?s done in Champagne and involves

letting the wine juice go through a second fermentation in the bottle by adding a little mix of sugar and yeast, called a liqueur de tirage.?This second fermentation is?what creates the bubbles ? by way of carbon dioxide ? and usually means a?creamier mousse and a yeast or biscuit flavor profile. The Charmat method is used in the making of Prosecco where the second fermentation happens in a stainless steel tank and the bubbles are preserved by bottling while under pressure. This usually means floral and sometimes candy-like aromas with a more vigorous mousse.

Try a side-by-side tasting and see if you can spot the differences between these two bottles of bubbly. The Prosecco is made in the Charmat method and the Cava from Spain is made in a traditional method. They?re both great bargains for the holidays.

Villa Sandi Prosecco, from Italy ($14.15)

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva Cava Sparkling, from Spain ($14.25)

Fossil of Long-Extinct Whale Found on Seafloor

Researchers diving off the coast of Georgia may have found the remains of an Atlantic gray whale, a relic of a population that was hunted to extinction by the 18th century.

But this particular specimen died long before whalers became a threat. Carbon dating showed that the fossil, a left jawbone, is about 36,000 years old.

The big bone was first discovered along with two badly eroded vertebrae near Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary about 20 miles (32 kilometers) off southeast Georgia in 2008. It took the researchers two years to pull out all of the pieces of the fossil, which was embedded in layers of shell and sand 70 feet (21 meters) below the surface. The jawbone was recovered in sections and measures 5 feet (1.5 m) in length.

The researchers say the bone is clearly from a baleen whale ? or whales that use baleen plates in their mouths to filter meals of tiny organisms out of seawater ? and looks very similar to that of the gray whale, Eschrichtius robustus. This species is only locally extinct. Gray whales can be found today in quite strong numbers, but only in the Pacific Ocean, and even these had once teetered on the brink of extinction during eras when the whaling industry reigned.

Scientists previously believed that the Atlantic gray whale had been a distinct species. But recent research has shown these vanished whales and the living ones in the Pacific are actually one in the same.

"The California grays looked exactly like the bones that were dug up in Scandinavia back in the 19th century," Ervan Garrison, a geoarchaeology professor at the University of Georgia, said in a statement, describing it as "one of the first instances where a living species was named based on the fossil evidence."

The new specimen's age of approximately 36,570 years old makes it one of the oldest fossil finds in the western Atlantic basin, the researchers say. And if the find indeed represents a Pleistocene-age gray whale, its oldest counterpart is a specimen found on the southern North Sea dating to 42,800 years ago.

The research was detailed online last month in the journal Paleontologica Electronica.

situated on an extremely small plot measuring only 65 sqm, ?grow? by apollo architects & associates is a downtown tokyo residence conceived
for a husband-and-wife designer couple.

on the ground floor, a cockpit-like office at the entrance which runs along the east side of the home, neighbors the garage,
separated by a single pane of glass which visually expands the narrow space. when the garage is open to its fullest extent,
it creates a sense of unity between the street and interior. a small square white rock covered courtyard located at the back left corner
of the garage fills with diffused light which floods down from the upper levels, projecting a sense of tranquility into the adjoining master bedroom.

a staircase which spirals from the ground floor to the penthouse leads upwards to the second floor outfitted with a large changing room
and sleeping quarters for the client?s three children ? this area is divided by a curtain. two large doors which open out over the courtyard
from the bathroom allow one to enjoy a relaxing ?outdoor? bath complete with fresh air and sunlight.

the third floor floor houses the dwelling?s main communal areas such as the kitchen and living room. high skylights installed along the walls
and the ceiling ? which is sloped as a result of the setback limit imposed by the city ? provide a lot of natural light into the home,
making it feel open and airy despite its small area. these windows also offer panoramic views of the sky and downtown area with built-in furniture
covered in tatami mats lining the south and east facing walls of the family room. a balcony extends from the kitchen where the residents
are able to grow their own plants, allowing them to prepare food in an open environment, while a rooftop garden offers an additional green oasis
for the owners in the middle of the city.
