Hall of fame: Nate True and Tap Tap Revolution

Hall of fame: Nate True and Tap Tap Revolution

Tap Tap Revolution began what became one of the first big gaming franchises on the iPhone. Created by Nate True, Tap Tap Revolution was developed over the course of two days, and released on September 11, 2007, not even 3 months after the original iPhone launched, and roughly a month before Steve Jobs' open letter announcing an official SDK would be coming in 2008. True wrote on cre.ations.net at the time:

Download songs from my online collection (contact me to get your own music on there) and tap to the beat when the lights hit the bottom line.

TTR has an online update feature (under "New Tracks") where new tracks will be added (by indie artists). You can download and play them over your Wi-fi connection (downloading not recommended over EDGE but it will work).

TTR was a hit, and in 2008 True sold it to Tapulous. True also joined Tapulous to continue development of TTR, writing on cre.ations.net:

Suffice it to say, their push for more features definitely works out better for you guys. [...] We're pushing to get into the App Store at launch. It will be free, at least to begin with. So get yours as soon as you can!

Among the new features True teased was two-player mode. However, the new, official SDK also came with some official limitations:

A few of you eagle-eyed participants have noticed that the iTunes Library option is missing from the official version. This is due to restrictions in the iPhone SDK, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it won't be gone forever!

At Tapulous, True was joined on the coding side by Guy English, and on the design side by Louie Mantia. TTR also changed names, to Tap Tap Revenge. In a "long boring history" post on Decremental, Tapulous founder Bart Decrem elaborated:

Nate True and Guy English worked together on what would become Tap Tap Revenge 1.0. [...] The design for Tap Tap Revenge 1 was done by Louie Mantia. The product definition largely came from Nate, with contributions by Louie, Guy and myself. [...] On July 11, 2008, the App Store launched. Tap Tap Revenge was there on launch day and shot straight to #1.

Tap Tap Revenge was even featured on iPod touch art, including a banner inside Apple's Cupertino headquarters. True posed in front of it, and shared the image on cre.ations.net

In March of 2009, Tapulous released Tap Tap Revenge 2, and re-released the original version as Tap Tap Classic. It was followed by Tap Tap Revenge 3 in October of 2009, and Tap Tap Revenge 4 in December of 2010. TTR also branched out, offering versions of the hit game centered around specific artists, like Cold Play, Katie Perry, Nine Inch Nails, the TV show Glee, and many, many more. They also added Tap Tap Dance to their portfolio in 2008, Riddim Ribbon for iPhone, as well as Tap Tap Radiation for the original iPad, in 2010, and recently, Tap Tap Revenge Tour.

Tapulous was acquired by Disney in July 2010, in no small part thanks to the strength of the brand that began with True's work in 2007. True moved on to Monster Costume, where he's now a partner and chief engineer. According to the Monster Costume site, some of his work there includes:

ABC News for iPad, Nick Chase HD, the Bartleby children's book series, and more.

Bringing popular music gameplay to the iPhone in a time before any official gaming existed, figuring out how to translate the play mechanics to multitouch and implement them absent any public-facing frameworks, and working as part of Tapulous to adapt and launch his creation alongside Apple's App Store, True helped show a generation of developers the potential of the iPhone as a mainstream gaming platform, and as a place where new, hugely successful franchises could be born.

That's why, as part of the inaugural iMore hall of fame, we're honoring Nate True, and the musical masterpiece that was born Tap Tap Revolution.

Meese to Retire as Head of Legal Center; Addington to Take on Role

Washington, D.C., Jan. 3, 2013 -- After nearly 25 years of leadership and service to The Heritage Foundation, former Attorney General Edwin Meese III today announced he is ?semi-retiring.? Meese will leave his full-time position as chairman of Heritage?s Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, but remain onboard as the think tank?s Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow Emeritus. In this capacity, he will oversee special projects and act as an ambassador for Heritage within the conservative movement.

Effective Feb. 1, David Addington will become senior vice president for legal and judicial policy, heading the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies. In this new capacity, Addington will be responsible for the Legal Center?s research and education programs. Addington currently serves as Heritage?s senior vice president and deputy chief operating officer.

?It has been an incredible honor to work with one of the greatest, most honorable men of our time,? Heritage President Edwin J. Feulner said of Meese. ?His lifelong dedication to the principles of government, as established by this nation?s Founders, has helped preserve freedom, opportunity and justice in America for two generations.

?Ed Meese?s wisdom, humanity and patriotism are second to none,? Feulner added, ?and I can think of no one more capable or talented to take over the reins of our Legal Center than David Addington.?

The center was renamed the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies last fall, in recognition of Meese?s contributions to the rule of law and the nation?s understanding of constitutional law.

Edwin MeeseAfter his announcement, Meese stated: ?I?ve thoroughly enjoyed my tenure with The Heritage Foundation and appreciate the opportunity to continue working with such wonderful colleagues. Heritage is an outstanding organization that remains dedicated to the principles President Reagan served so well, and David Addington is an outstanding choice to lead the Legal Center for years to come.?

Meese served as the 75th attorney general of the United States from February 1985 to August 1988. Earlier in the Reagan administration, Meese held the position of counsellor to the president and functioned as Reagan?s chief policy adviser. Meese joined Heritage in 1988 as the think tank?s first Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow. In 2001, Meese became the founder and chairman of its Center for Legal and Judicial Studies.

David AddingtonAddington joined Heritage in 2010 as vice president for domestic and economic policy. In 2012, he was promoted to senior vice president and deputy chief operating officer. Before joining Heritage, Addington held senior posts in both the executive and legislative branches of the federal government, as well as in the private sector. Among other posts, he served as general counsel of the U.S. Department of Defense, deputy assistant to the president for legislative affairs, and minority chief counsel of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Most recently he served from 2001 to 2009 as counsel and then chief of staff to the Vice President of the United States.

Author offers spot in book for finding lost dog

BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) ? There's a new mystery on Dennis Lehane's mind, and the best-selling author is offering a special reward solving the case: Find his lost dog and get a spot in his next book.

The plot kicked off Christmas Eve, when the crime novelist's rescue beagle Tessa escaped from his yard after an outdoor gate latch didn't lock all the way.

Since then, Lehane's family has launched an all-out search. They've posted fliers, organized foot searches and used social media to try to bring Tessa back to their home in Brookline, Mass., near Boston.

The 47-year-old author of books including "Mystic River" and "Gone, Baby, Gone" is offering a monetary reward and has said he'll name a character in his next book after whoever finds Tessa.

Lehane said Thursday outside his home that he's surprised by the media attention the story has attracted, and thinks it has something to do with the character offer.

But he said as word of the missing dog spread, his family has heard from people across the country on a "Finding Tessa" Facebook page. They even got an offer of help from a dog psychic in San Francisco.

"No dog since Lassie ever got this attention ... the flip side of the comedy is, who wouldn't do this for their dog?" he said.

The doggie dilemma comes as Lehane faces a Friday deadline for finishing a movie script based on his short story "Animal Rescue," timing he said may be "sadistic irony." The movie is scheduled to begin shooting in March in New York City.

The author said he's been spending about four hours a day searching for the tri-colored female beagle after he finishes writing, and his wife has dedicated about 10 hours a day to the effort.

They adopted the 4-year-old beagle not long ago from a Florida rescue agency. Before that, Tessa was a stray in Georgia.

With the help of Twitter and Facebook accounts, Lehane and his wife organized two search efforts Thursday in sections of Brookline and Boston, where they suspect Tessa could be. In the beginning, there were three sightings within about two miles of their home not long after a house sitter reported that the dog was loose.

But the trail went cold for days after a sighting near a McDonald's restaurant. Tessa wasn't wearing tags, but does have a microchip.

"Every dog expert we talk to is strongly suggesting that she's in somebody's house," Lehane said. "That's why we keep saturating the area with pictures. Because somebody could have her and just not know."

Missing dog posters dotted the family's Coolidge Corner neighborhood Thursday, including in the front windows at Durty Harry's dog grooming shop where Tessa is a client. Shop owner Michelle Fournier said interest in the search took off even before people knew Tessa had a famous owner.

"This is about a dog and her family. This is about a community who loves dogs," she said.

Lehane said Thursday that Tessa is so sweet that she'd taken to spooning the family's puppy before her disappearance. He said if someone knows where Tessa is, he only cares about a happy ending, not about solving the mystery of where she's been.

"It's a no-questions-asked issue," the author said. "... Bring the dog to a shelter or call me and I will pick up the dog."

'Buckwild' stars: We only represent ourselves

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Just as "Jersey Shore's" reality TV reign ends, another potentially polarizing MTV show is poised to claim the controversy-stirring, stereotype-perpetuating title.

"Buckwild," a new series that focuses on the lives and wild times of nine twentysomethings in West Virginia, gained notoriety before the first episode even aired. Sen. Joe Manchin recently wrote an open letter to MTV stating that he was "repulsed" at the thought of what he fears will be an Appalachian sendup that coaxes young people "into displaying shameful behavior" and gives the rest of the world the wrong image of his home state.

But fear not, say the stars of the show. During a Thursday morning visit to TODAY, Shae Bradley and Shain Gandee insisted they're not going to give the world an image of anyone but themselves.

"Well, as far as the criticism goes, I represent myself and myself only," Shae said. "So to say that nine individuals represent the whole state of West Virginia is just silly, you know? Even my best friends on the show, if they do something embarrassing, that's on them."

Shain agreed and stressed that the show was really just a glimpse of their "you only live once, so live it up" way of life.

Their "Buckwild" antics premiere Thursday night at 10 on MTV.

Do you think critics of the show should give it a chance, or do you think the reality TV series is just a bad idea? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.
