Falls' gamble on casino hasn't paid off | The NiagaraHub

[From BuffaloNews.com]

Like a desperate gambler with one last roll of the dice, Niagara Falls a decade ago bet on casino gambling to turn its hard luck into good fortune.

The towering Seneca Niagara Casino came with a promise of jobs, money and development ? which all seemed foreign to the struggling city.

But as the casino?s first decade ends this week, not many of the hopes have turned to reality ? and the city has mixed feelings about the gamble.

5 killed, at least 20 injured in Oregon bus crash

By NBC News

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- Five people were killed and at least 20 others hospitalized on Sunday after a tour bus veered out of control on an icy stretch of freeway in eastern Oregon and rolled nearly 200 feet down an embankment, according to published reports.

Police told the Associated Press that the driver lost control of the charter bus around 10:30 a.m. on the snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84. The Oregonian newspaper reported that the bus crashed through a guardrail and tumbled nearly 200 feet down an embankment.

Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings told the newspaper that about 40 passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash.?Rescue workers used ropes to help retrieve the injured from the scene. Westbound lanes of I-84 were closed.

The Oregonian said 18 passengers were transported to St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton, about 50 miles northwest of the crash scene. Hospital spokesman Larry Blanc would not say?if or how many passengers sustained life-threatening injuries, it said.

Three fixed-wing aircraft also were on standby at the Pendleton airport if needed to transport injured to hospitals elsewhere, state police.

Authorities did not immediately identify the operator of the charter bus.

Are You Surfing Safely? | Hodgson Consulting Tech Tips

Does your computer ever run slow, act funny, or crash unexpectedly? Do you get a ton of pop-up ads, even when you are not actively surfing the web? Has your browser been ?hijacked? and replaced with another unknown browser? If so, your computer is infected with malicious spyware and viruses that can alter your computer, steal your confidential information, and disable the use of your PC, leaving you without a computer for hours or days while you get it fixed.
And what?s worse ?most times once your computer has been hit by these threats, it has to be completely wiped in order to fix it. Unless you have a backup image (a snapshot of everything on the PC, exactly as it is), it will never quite be the same again. You may lose software programs that you downloaded, but don?t have the disk for, your icons won?t be where you remember them, and ?little? things like your default printer could be all screwed up. It can be a nightmare.
One big misconception many computer users have about spyware and viruses is that these programs somehow invaded their computer through no action or fault of their own ? in most cases, this is simply not true.
Malware, spyware, and viruses are usually a result of some action taken by the user (you or an employee that uses your computer). Remember, cyber criminals are incredibly clever and gain access to your computer via some of the most innocent and common activities you are performing; that is why it SEEMS as though it is your computer?s fault when in reality, YOU are unknowingly giving these hackers and auto-loading devastating programs free access to your computer.
Deadly programs to avoid are free ?enhanced? web browsers, screen savers, and just about any ?cute? programs you come across that are free to download. Always read the terms and conditions before downloading ANY program to look for clauses that allow them (the software vendor) to install spyware programs on your computer.
Unfortunately, installing programs is not the only way a hacker or malware program can access your computer. If you do not have the most up-to-date security patches and virus definitions installed on your computer, hackers can access your PC through a banner ad on the web that you accidentally clicked on or through an e-mail attachment that you opened.
Hackers have also figured out ways to install malicious programs on your computer via your IE web browser, EVEN IF YOU DIDN?T CLICK ON ANYTHING OR DOWNLOAD A PROGRAM. Microsoft is constantly providing ?patches? to their operating system software, and all it takes is one missed update to leave you completely vulnerable.
That?s why it?s so important to have someone in charge of updating your computers and server DAILY. An innocent web search by an employee can end up bringing on a host of viruses, hacker invasions, or other evil attacks that end up costing you hundreds or thousands in lost wages and repair costs.

I?m Bored. What?s Next?

boredIt?s just about 2013 and I gotta say, I?m a little bored. At least, the blogger in me is. As an investor things are just peachy. All this panic about overpriced consumer startups has led to a nice softening of the market (periodic reports of Blubbles are great for that). And other sectors, like business to business, is still under capitalized v. the consumer sector.

NBA scores: Rockets loss to Spurs hurts as top teams in West win

Houston lost a game on the Western Conference leaders after losing to San Antonio on Friday night.

The Houston Rockets failed to keep pace in the Western Conference on Friday after losing to the San Antonio Spurs, 122-116.

Normally, if James Harden and Jeremy Lin combine for 54 points and 15 assists the Rockets should expect a win. But those numbers from Houston's back court weren't enough to overcome an offensive outburst from the Spurs. Point guard Tony Parker paced San Antonio with 31 points and 10 assists while Tim Duncan added 30 points of his own.

The loss dropped the Rockets six games behind the Spurs in the Southwest Division standings and 7.5 games behind the Los Angeles Clippers at the top of the conference standings.

In other key games, the Oklahoma City Thunder survived overtime against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday to rally for a 111-105 win as Kevin Durant dropped 40 points.

Meanwhile, the Clippers took control of the conference lead with a strong 106-77 blowout of the Boston Celtics on Thursday, followed by a hard-fought road win over the Utah Jazz on Friday. The Clips won their 16th-consecutive game by scoring 68 second-half points to beat the Jazz, 116-114.

Other Western Conference contenders in action on Friday included the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors. Golden State earned a 96-89 win over the Philadelphia 76ers as David Lee scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Denver ran past Dallas, 106-85, thanks to 39 points from Danilo Gallinari and 19 rebounds from Kenneth Faried.

In another big East-West match-up, James Johnson made a late three-pointer to lift the Sacramento Kings to an upset win over the New York Knicks 106-105.

Here's a look at the full NBA scoreboard.

Clippers beat Jazz 116-114 for 16th straight win

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? The Los Angeles Clippers already have a December to remember.

Sunday they can close it out in perfect fashion against a familiar foe ? the same Utah team they rallied to beat 116-114 Friday night to earn their 16th straight win.

If they extend their streak by beating the Jazz at home Sunday, they will join the 1995-96 Spurs and 1971-72 Lakers as the only teams in NBA history to complete a 16-0 month.

If they fight the way they did Friday, it should be easy.

"Give Utah credit, but our guys battled back tonight," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "They found a way to win and that's what it's all about. We stayed together, we weathered the storm when we had to and gave ourselves a chance and we were fortunate to make enough plays."

Afterward, team leader Chris Paul could hardly be heard over the pulsating music of Jay-Z as his teammates sang along in the visitors' locker room.

Why not?

The Clippers had just pulled off a 19-point comeback in what had been a dreadful venue for them.

Paul did most of the damage, leading the Clippers (24-6) with 29 points, including the final seven, as Los Angeles pulled out the two-point victory.

The Clippers winning streak is the longest in the NBA since Boston won 19 in row from Nov. 15 to Dec. 23, 2008.

The last time the franchise won three straight in Salt Lake City was 1979-1981 when they were the San Diego Clippers.

"This one is a great win for us because we kind of needed a challenge," said Blake Griffin, who had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers. "(We had) to prove not only to everybody else but to ourselves that we can still win close games like this and win a game down 19 in the third quarter."

In the opposing locker room, the Jazz were lamenting another one that got away ? the second loss at home to the Clippers during their record streak. They dropped the first by one on Dec. 3 after leading by 14.

On Friday, ex-Clipper Randy Foye put up a 3-pointer at the buzzer that was contested by Matt Barnes, but no foul was called. Foye finished with a season-high 28 points for Utah.

Foye did his best not to say anything about the officiating.

"I felt as though I pump-faked," Foye said. "He knew that I wanted to shoot the 3 and I felt the contact. He made me go straight up and shoot the ball straight down. It was just a tough play."

Paul was tough down the stretch, with the clinching free throws after getting fouled by Al Jefferson with 3.4 seconds left.

"When (DeAndre Jordan) came to give me the ball screen, I wasn't worried about (Gordon) Hayward, I was just worried about Al Jefferson," Paul said. "I could tell (Jefferson) was going to try and blitz me. Anytime two guys try and trap me, I'm always going to attack the slower guy. If they wouldn't have called the foul, I was right around Al anyway."

He sank both free throws this time, after missing one with 18 seconds left that allowed Jefferson to grab the rebound, draw the foul and sink two free throws at the other end to tie it at 114.

Paul made sure he got both the next time.

"Man, I couldn't wait to get to the line. I couldn't wait to get to the line," Paul said. "I was mad at myself for missing that last one. I couldn't wait to get to the line to redeem myself."

Just like the first game this season against the Jazz, Utah had the upper hand early.

The Jazz used a 36-point second quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a 58-48 halftime lead.

Their reserves did most of the damage. Alec Burks and Earl Watson pushed the pace, big men Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors showed their presence inside and Hayward found ways to score.

Kanter's block of Ronny Turiaf ignited the crowd.

Hayward's 3-pointer tied it at 34 with 7:04 left in the second and he scored 10 straight for the Jazz, who forced eight turnovers in the quarter and held the Clippers to 37.5 percent shooting.

Foye, who kept Utah close in the first with a 13-point quarter on 4-of-5 shooting, gave the Jazz their biggest lead of the half, 54-41, with two more free throws.

The Jazz led 74-55 with 8:08 left in the third on a pair of free throws by Paul Millsap. But the Clippers outscored Utah 29-14 the rest of the quarter to go ahead 88-84 going into the fourth.

Paul provided the offense in the third with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

"At the beginning of the third quarter, they made another run at us but then we got a little bit of a rhythm and then started guarding. We started getting some stops and getting out in the open court," Del Negro said.

The loss dropped Utah below .500 at 15-16. The Jazz have now lost six of their last eight.

Al Jefferson added 22 points for Utah. Hayward had 17 off the bench for Utah.

DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who had six players in double figures.

"It's all tough," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "On our home court. We had a lead, we gave up the lead but we continued to fight. We made some mistakes but fought our way through it and had a chance to win the ball game at the end. Unfortunately they got a lot of free throws."

NOTES: An unidentified Jazz employee was disciplined and had his access to the team Twitter account discontinued after what team officials deemed an inappropriate tweet regarding the firing of Nets coach Avery Johnson and Brooklyn's interest in Phil Jackson. The tweet said Jackson only wants "great players," an apparent reference to ex-Jazz point guard Deron Williams, who had criticized Johnson's offense. ... Jazz point guard Mo Williams still has swelling in his sprained right thumb and remains out indefinitely. ... The Clippers got a scare late in the first quarter when Lamar Odom came up limping. He returned in the second and finished with 12 points. ... The Clippers failed to register a blocked shot despite coming into the game averaging 6.52.

Euro doomsayers adjust predictions after 2012 apocalypse averted

BERLIN (Reuters) - Back in May, as the euro zone veered deeper into crisis, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman penned one of his gloomiest columns about the single currency, a piece in the New York Times entitled "Apocalypse Fairly Soon".

"Suddenly, it has become easy to see how the euro -- that grand, flawed experiment in monetary union without political union -- could come apart at the seams," Krugman wrote. "We're not talking about a distant prospect, either. Things could fall apart with stunning speed, in a matter of months, not years."

Krugman was far from being alone in predicting imminent doom for the euro in 2012. Billionaire investor George Soros told a conference in Italy in early June that Germany had a mere three-month window to avert European disaster.

Then in July, Willem Buiter, chief economist at Citigroup and former Bank of England policymaker, raised the probability that Greece would leave the euro to 90 percent, even going so far as to provide a date on which it might occur.

Buiter's D-Day -- January 1, 2013 -- falls next week. And yet no one now believes a "Grexit", or catastrophic implosion of the euro zone for that matter, is just around the corner.

Half a year ago the chorus calling an end to the euro reached a crescendo. Among the chief doom-mongers were some of the world's leading economists and investors, many of them based in the United States.

Fast forward six months and their prophesies look ill-judged, or premature at the least. The euro has rebounded against the U.S. dollar. The bond yields of stricken countries like Greece, Spain and Italy -- a market gauge of how risky these countries are -- have fallen back.

Even the gloomiest of the gloomy are revising their forecasts, although they warn of more trouble ahead.

"Europe has surprised me with its political resilience," Krugman admitted earlier this month in a blog post.

In October, Citi lowered its view on the likelihood of Greece exiting the currency area within 18 months to a still high 60 percent and there are plenty of economists who think that while a patchwork of measures have drawn some sting out of the crisis they have done little to address its root causes.

Krugman and Buiter did not return mails seeking comment. Soros declined to be interviewed.

POLITICAL WILL

With the benefit of hindsight, it seems clear that many simply underestimated the political will in Europe to keep the euro together, and the impact that a series of policy shifts in the second half of 2012 would have on sentiment.

The most important of these were European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's July promise to do "whatever it takes" to defend the euro -- which led to the ECB's commitment to buy euro zone government bonds in sufficient amounts to shore up the currency bloc -- and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's late-summer shift on Greece.

After wavering for many months on the costs and benefits of a Greek exit, she finally came around to the view that the risks to Europe and her own political prospects of letting Greece go were far too great.

"There may be a logic to Greece leaving, but the mechanics are too disruptive for both Greece and its neighbors," said Barry Eichengreen, an economist at U.C. Berkeley, who has long argued that the euro is irreversible.

"An appreciation of European politics makes you realize that everything will be done to prevent a breakup of the monetary union. It would be intensely catastrophic, economically and politically."

Capital Economics, a UK-based consultancy that forecast one or more countries would leave the single currency bloc by the end of 2012, now concedes that it underestimated the ECB's determination to save the euro and the market's faith in the bank's promises.

"It may simply take longer," Jennifer McKeown, senior European economist at Capital Economics said of a euro breakup. "It's obviously not happening this year."

Prominent investors have also paid a price for betting against the euro zone this year. Earlier this month celebrated U.S. hedge fund manager John Paulson blamed big losses suffered in 2012 on his bets that the sovereign debt crisis would worsen.

For those who placed their chips on the other side of the table, there were stellar returns of around 80 percent to be had on 10-year Greek and Portuguese government bonds this year.

CRISIS DEFERRED

Nouriel Roubini, the New York University economist whose bearish forecasts earned him the nickname "Dr. Doom", has been in the gloom camp from the beginning, predicting as far back as 2010 that countries would be forced to abandon the single currency.

Now he says the risks of a near-term catastrophe have been reduced. Reflecting the more cautious view of many of his colleagues, Roubini believes 2013 will be another year in which European politicians "muddle through", avoiding catastrophe.

But the euro's day of reckoning will come, he believes, with the risks metastasizing over the course of 2013 and Greece, once again, posing the biggest threat.

At the height of the crisis in June, the euro zone dodged a bullet when the conservative party New Democracy narrowly beat anti-bailout leftists SYRIZA in the Greek election.

Since then, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has been able to keep his three-party coalition together, and behind austerity measures needed to keep bailout money flowing. But as the country enters its sixth year of recession and support for the government wanes, his task will become harder.

Recent opinion polls show SYRIZA with a five point edge, underscoring the risks of a political earthquake in Athens at some point in 2013.

"By late fall of next year, the Greek coalition could collapse and an exit may be back on the table," Roubini told Reuters.

Even economists like Eichengreen are reluctant to declare the worst of the crisis over, pointing to deep recessions on Europe's periphery and the risk of political complacency.

At a December summit in Brussels, European governments delayed serious discussion on closer fiscal integration until mid-2013 and made clear that creation of a "banking union" would stretch into 2014 and beyond.

"What we have seen throughout this crisis is a cycle where steps are taken, politicians think the problems are solved, they sit on their hands and the situation worsens again, with spreads blowing out. I'm sure we'll see more of this going forward," Eichengreen said.

Krugman, while expressing surprise at Europe's ability to avert disaster in 2012, isn't backing off his predictions of gloom either.

In his recent blog post "Bleeding Europe", he likens the austerity imposed on countries like Greece, Portugal, Spain and Ireland to "medieval medicine" in which patients were bled to treat their ailments. When the bleeding made them sicker, they were bled some more.

Even if the euro has defied forecasts of its demise, the economics of austerity, Krugman says, are playing out "exactly according to script".

DirecTV 'price adjustment' will raise rates about 4.5 percent in February

DirecTV 'price adjustment' will raise prices about 45 percent in February

DirecTV announced today that it will raise its prices effected February 7, 2013, with the average customer's bill going up about 4.5 percent. The card shown above displays the new rates (hit the source link to see them all) which it claims are up less than cable competitor's price hikes, and are pushed by programming costs that have gone up eight percent. The last time we noted an increase in prices, DirecTV had just added a slew of HD channels. This time, it comes after a year that's seen a number of DVR upgrades, more new channels, a lower price for Sunday Ticket, the launch DirecTV Everywhere features and, of course, a battle over programming costs with Viacom. We predicted that last bit would be reflected sooner or later in a pricing adjustment and it appears the time has come. So tell us DirecTV customers, are the new features, and keeping all those channels worth an increase to you, or are you thinking of moving on?

Future Opinions of the State of Real Estate by REMAX's Paris911 ...

We compiled and uploaded each of our market updates yesterday for the Santa Clarita Valley Cities. In some cases the price increase trend is still alive and well within the SCV. ?In others ? we have reduced somewhat. ?I think this next year will be quite revealing. ?With all of the talk about fiscal cliff being more of a fiscal slide, I?m sure that most ?sectors? will survive and interest rates will continue to remain low through 2013.

I also forecast one last great release by the banks and their foreclosure inventory. ?While this is not popular to opine ? I think Santa Clarita housingthere is one last ?Hoo Rah? left for the 5 largest banks that still hold gobs of foreclosure inventory. ?We posted up some numbers for Stevenson Ranch Foreclosure Data ? as a side note this AM showing some of the values between the banks buying back their properties and then selling at the auction to third parties.

I have a feeling that the debt?forgiveness?act will also be re-approved and extended to the end of 2013. ?This is the ?help mechanism? that was put in place by Bush back in 2007 that helps those that are short selling and foreclosing obtain a tax forgiveness for the difference between what they owed on their mortgage and what the home eventually sold for. ?This also reminds me to talk about Short Sales a bit - Head over to our Santa Clarita Short Sale Page within our SCV Realty Site for further intel.

I think the approval is going to be given to cut the mortgage tax deduction to a maximum write off of $500,000.00. ?It currently stands at homeowners being able to write off 1M in mortgage interest on their taxes as a deduction. ?Will this kill the market? ?Maybe not ?kill? but it will cause some respectful pause for those that are looking to finance amounts greater than $500,000.00. ?I also think this may negatively affect those sectors of the housing world that are considered the ?higher ends? of real estate listings.

If you look at the photo above ? you will see that real estate in the Santa Clarita Valley cities is by no means dead. ?This is for the time period of a few days?preceding?Christmas and ending on 12/27/2012. ?During the span of time between 12/20 and today, you can see there have been 29 listings that have hit the real estate market for sale in the following cities:

  • Castaic
  • Canyon Country
  • Newhall
  • Stevenson Ranch
  • Valencia
  • Saugus

You will also notice that we have had 15 price changes happen on the Santa Clarita real estate for sale front. ?That?primary?has to do with the adjustment of the short sale listings after being approved by the banks holding the note. ?Sometimes the banks don?t approve the list price established by the real estate agent handling the short sale. ?They sometimes comeback at a higher level after they have the home appraised or a BPO ? broker price?opinion?- completed.

The staggering number during this previous week in Santa Clarita real estate is the number having to do with BOM (back on market) listings. ?Those are homes, condo?s and town-homes that were in escrow that fell out. ?This could be for a number of reasons too. ?It could be that the bank, with regard to a short sale, was approved and came back at a price the buyer could not afford or was unwilling to pay. ?It could have been that a buyer discovered that there was something wrong with the property they were buying that they could not deal with. ?Sometimes the buyer asks for repairs on a Bank owned property and the bank says, ?you agreed to buying the home in AS IS condition?, and the buyer cancel?s the transaction when they get that type of response from the bank.

62 people in the Santa Clarita valley are homeowners now that were not before this past week. ?We are happy for them and wish them well. ?We?especially?want to sent our Greeting and Salutations to our Real Estate sellers and buyers that closed during the past 7 days. ?It was our honor to have met, earned your trust and your business. ?Happy Holidays and let us know if you need anything at all.

Please subscribe to our Santa Clarita Sellers Blog in the right margin ? we?d appreciate it very much. ?Opt out at any time and we have a ?no spam? guarantee. ?You will only get what you subscribe to ? period. ?We hate Spam also.

Newspaper's handgun-permit map draws criticism

NEW YORK (AP) ? A newspaper's publication of the names and addresses of handgun permit holders in two New York counties has sparked online discussions ? and a healthy dose of outrage.

The Journal News, a Gannett Co. newspaper covering three counties in the Hudson Valley north of New York City and operating the website lohud.com, posted a story Sunday detailing a public-records request it filed to obtain the information.

The 1,800-word story headlined, "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," said the information was sought after the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Conn., about 50 miles northeast of the paper's headquarters in White Plains. A gunman killed his mother, drove to an elementary school and massacred 20 first-graders and six adults, then shot himself. All the weapons used were legally owned by his mother.

The Journal News story includes comments from both sides of the gun-rights debate and presents the data as answering concerns of those who would like to know whether there are guns in their neighborhood. It reports that about 44,000 people in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties are licensed to own a handgun, and that rifles and shotguns can be purchased without a permit.

It was accompanied online by maps of the results for Westchester and Rockland counties; similar details had not yet been provided by Putnam County. A reader clicking on the maps can see the name and address of each pistol or revolver permit holder. Accompanying text states that inclusion does not necessarily mean that an individual owns a weapon, just who obtained a license.

By Wednesday afternoon, the maps had shared about 30,000 times on Facebook and other social media.

Most online comments have criticized the publication of the data, and many suggest it puts the permit holders in danger because criminals have a guide to places they can steal guns. Others maintain it tells criminals who does not have a gun and may be easier to victimize, or where to find law enforcement figures against whom they might hold a grudge.

Some responded by publicizing the home addresses and phone numbers of the reporter who wrote the piece, along with other journalists at the paper and even senior executives of Gannett. Many echoed the idea that publicizing gun permit holders' names is tantamount to accusing them of doing something wrong, comparing the move to publishing lists of registered sex offenders.

The Journal News is standing behind the project but did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. It said in the story that it published a similar list in 2006.

"New York residents have the right to own guns with a permit and they also have a right to access public information," Janet Hasson, president and publisher of The Journal News Media Group, said in a story the paper published about the response to the database.

Roy Clark, a senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based journalism think tank, said publishing the data was "too indiscriminate."

He, too, compared the maps to similar efforts involving sex-offender registries or lists of those arrested for driving under the influence, noting that such a move is usually done to indicate a serious problem that requires a neighbor or parent to maintain vigilance.

"You get the connotation that somehow there's something essentially wrong with this behavior," he said of the gun permit database.

"My predisposition is to support the journalism," Clark said. "I want to be persuaded that this story or this practice has some higher social purpose, but I can't find it."

Also common among the comments on the lohud.com were suggestions about suing the paper for violating permit-holders' privacy rights. Such a move would likely be unsuccessful.

"The media has no liability for publishing public information," said Edward Rudofsky, a First Amendment attorney at Zane and Rudofsky in New York. The issue does present a clash between First and Second amendment rights, he said, but in general, the law protects publishing public information unless the intent was to harm someone.

(AP) ? Egypt's president says the disputed constitution just approved in a referendum establishes a new republic and calls on the opposition to join a dialogue to heal rifts and shift the focus to repairing the economy.

Mohammed Morsi said Wednesday he acknowledges the "respectable" proportion that voted against the constitution drafted by his Islamist allies, but offered no concrete gestures to an opposition that has so far rejected his dialogue and vowed to fight the charter. Critics say the charter restricts freedoms and enshrines Islamic rule.

Morsi said he moved swiftly to put the constitution to a referendum to end instability and open the road for development. The opposition had urged him to postpone the vote.

How'd your holiday Photospheres turn out?

Holiday Photosphere

Google a couple weeks ago made a rather nice commercial out of the Photosphere feature, in which you make a 360-degree (more or less) panoramic photo that all gets stitched together on your phone. The holiday spot has someone taking a Photosphere in a (very) large house, with a bunch of family members in the shot.

Now, we all know Rule No. 1 of taking Photospheres is to not have anything too close to you as you take the picture. Rule No. 2 is the fewer people, the better, as people tend to move.

So I waited until things had died down a little bit. My result? Not horrible, especially since I didn't tell anyone to hold still. Check out the full Photosphere pic here. And if you took any over the holidays, be sure to tag them with #photosphere on Google+ so we can all see!

Tale of Two Sparklers: Two Sparkling Wines for the Holidays

champagne holly bruns

By Holly Bruns

-

Birthdays, weddings and anniversaries, promotions, New Year?s and pretty much any other special occasion ? or maybe just a lazy Sunday afternoon: they?re all good reasons to open a bottle of bubbly; the world goes round to the sound of corks popping. Champagne, or sparkling wine as it?s called in the rest of the world, is the elixir that provides all the excitement and hopefully over the holidays we?ll all be getting our fair share of the stuff?because, while it?s a celebratory drink, it also goes well with food and can be a terrific ap?ritif.

Sparkling wine is made in a few different ways, but the two most popular methods are the champenoise, or traditional,?and the charmat methods. The traditional way is how it?s done in Champagne and involves

letting the wine juice go through a second fermentation in the bottle by adding a little mix of sugar and yeast, called a liqueur de tirage.?This second fermentation is?what creates the bubbles ? by way of carbon dioxide ? and usually means a?creamier mousse and a yeast or biscuit flavor profile. The Charmat method is used in the making of Prosecco where the second fermentation happens in a stainless steel tank and the bubbles are preserved by bottling while under pressure. This usually means floral and sometimes candy-like aromas with a more vigorous mousse.

Try a side-by-side tasting and see if you can spot the differences between these two bottles of bubbly. The Prosecco is made in the Charmat method and the Cava from Spain is made in a traditional method. They?re both great bargains for the holidays.

Villa Sandi Prosecco, from Italy ($14.15)

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva Cava Sparkling, from Spain ($14.25)

Fossil of Long-Extinct Whale Found on Seafloor

Researchers diving off the coast of Georgia may have found the remains of an Atlantic gray whale, a relic of a population that was hunted to extinction by the 18th century.

But this particular specimen died long before whalers became a threat. Carbon dating showed that the fossil, a left jawbone, is about 36,000 years old.

The big bone was first discovered along with two badly eroded vertebrae near Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary about 20 miles (32 kilometers) off southeast Georgia in 2008. It took the researchers two years to pull out all of the pieces of the fossil, which was embedded in layers of shell and sand 70 feet (21 meters) below the surface. The jawbone was recovered in sections and measures 5 feet (1.5 m) in length.

The researchers say the bone is clearly from a baleen whale ? or whales that use baleen plates in their mouths to filter meals of tiny organisms out of seawater ? and looks very similar to that of the gray whale, Eschrichtius robustus. This species is only locally extinct. Gray whales can be found today in quite strong numbers, but only in the Pacific Ocean, and even these had once teetered on the brink of extinction during eras when the whaling industry reigned.

Scientists previously believed that the Atlantic gray whale had been a distinct species. But recent research has shown these vanished whales and the living ones in the Pacific are actually one in the same.

"The California grays looked exactly like the bones that were dug up in Scandinavia back in the 19th century," Ervan Garrison, a geoarchaeology professor at the University of Georgia, said in a statement, describing it as "one of the first instances where a living species was named based on the fossil evidence."

The new specimen's age of approximately 36,570 years old makes it one of the oldest fossil finds in the western Atlantic basin, the researchers say. And if the find indeed represents a Pleistocene-age gray whale, its oldest counterpart is a specimen found on the southern North Sea dating to 42,800 years ago.

The research was detailed online last month in the journal Paleontologica Electronica.

situated on an extremely small plot measuring only 65 sqm, ?grow? by apollo architects & associates is a downtown tokyo residence conceived
for a husband-and-wife designer couple.

on the ground floor, a cockpit-like office at the entrance which runs along the east side of the home, neighbors the garage,
separated by a single pane of glass which visually expands the narrow space. when the garage is open to its fullest extent,
it creates a sense of unity between the street and interior. a small square white rock covered courtyard located at the back left corner
of the garage fills with diffused light which floods down from the upper levels, projecting a sense of tranquility into the adjoining master bedroom.

a staircase which spirals from the ground floor to the penthouse leads upwards to the second floor outfitted with a large changing room
and sleeping quarters for the client?s three children ? this area is divided by a curtain. two large doors which open out over the courtyard
from the bathroom allow one to enjoy a relaxing ?outdoor? bath complete with fresh air and sunlight.

the third floor floor houses the dwelling?s main communal areas such as the kitchen and living room. high skylights installed along the walls
and the ceiling ? which is sloped as a result of the setback limit imposed by the city ? provide a lot of natural light into the home,
making it feel open and airy despite its small area. these windows also offer panoramic views of the sky and downtown area with built-in furniture
covered in tatami mats lining the south and east facing walls of the family room. a balcony extends from the kitchen where the residents
are able to grow their own plants, allowing them to prepare food in an open environment, while a rooftop garden offers an additional green oasis
for the owners in the middle of the city.
