Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson came off the escalator at Sacramento International Airport from Houston to chants and a boatload of reporter questions about his efforts to block the sale of the Kings to Seattle during the NBA?s All-Star Weekend.

?I?m more focused and confident than I was before ? this deal?s not done. We?re gonna figure out a way to keep our team here in Sacramento,? Johnson told reporters.

During the All-Star festivities in Houston, Texas, Johnson was working owners but wasn?t tipping his hand or theirs about the make or break vote at the NBA Board of Governors meeting in April.

?You can?t negotiate this in public. You cannot. You have private conversations with people. You have to respect that. People tell you things that they?re thinking, but you can?t be in a situation where you?re negotiating in public. It?s just not the right thing to do,? said Johnson.

As for the major equity partners he?s been hinting at to buy the Sacramento Kings, joking referred to as ?whales?, Johnson says confidentiality is key to keep all of the moving parts of a complex transaction working.

?These are not people who?ve been successful negotiating everything in public,? Johnson said. ?There will be a time to do that, but right now it?s really about building our case and setting ourselves up to win.?

Also a topic in Houston as well as Sacramento, the debate over a potential arena at the rail yards versus Downtown Plaza, Johnson had this to say, ?We believe the tenets, the core tenets of the deal at the rail yard would start today if we had a signed deal. Those core tenets would also transfer over the to the downtown site.?
